in.â
Ham nodded, seeming to take some comfort in that idea.
They were on coffee when Lance looked at his watch. âExcuse me, I want to see if Iâve had anything from Langley yet.â He got up and left the table.
Seth came in from outdoors. âStone, can you come down to the dock for a minute? Thereâs something I want to show you.â
âWeâre expecting Sergeant Young shortly, Seth. Can it wait?â
âI donât think so,â Seth said.
Stone got up and followed, and everybody else followed Stone. Seth led them down to the dock where Dickâs yacht and the Hinckley picnic boat were docked.
âThis is what caught my attention,â Seth said, pointing at a corner of the picnic boatâs stern. âDid you do that by any chance?â
The corner was damaged, as if it had been hit from above by something heavy.
âNo, I didnât,â Stone said. âThis boat was pristine the last time I was aboard.â
âI didnât think so,â Seth said. He produced a bucket with a Plexiglas bottom. âCome over here and take a look.â He put the bottom of the bucket in the water astern of the boat and held it while Stone looked into it. The six-foot-deep water, which was clear but dark, became even clearer. A cubical object about eighteen inches on each side came dimly into view, half sunk into the muddy bottom.
âItâs got to be the safe,â Stone said.
âWhat safe?â Dino asked.
âDickâs safe from the study. Somebody got into the house and sawed it out of where it was bolted to a shelf in a cupboard.â
Seth said, âI reckon the feller muscled it down here to the dock to load it on a boat, and he slipped up and dropped it, hitting the boatâs transom. The safe went into the water, and nobody could get it out of there alone without some equipment.â
âSeth,â Stone said, âis there a wet suit among Dickâs stuff?â
âYes, in the garage,â Seth said, âbut itâs Dickâs size, and he was smaller than you or me.â
âWould it fit Dino?â
âHey, wait a minute,â Dino said.
âI reckon it would,â Seth replied.
âWill you take Dino inside and get him into the wet suit? Hit him over the head, if you have to. Then find some rope and a shovel.â
Â
DINO STOOD ON THE dock wearing the wet suit, a mask and a snorkel. âNow what?â he asked.
âItâs going to be just like that time you told me about in the Bahamas,â Stone said. âRemember how much you enjoyed the snorkeling?â
âThis is Maine, not the Bahamas,â Dino said. âThat water is fucking cold.â
âThatâs why youâre wearing the wet suit,â Stone said. âSee? Weâve thought of your every need.â
âButâ¦â
Stone pushed him into the water.
Dino sputtered to the surface. âYouâre going to pay for that, goddammit!â
âNow, hereâs what you do,â Stone said, handing him a shovel and a length of rope.

S TONE LET THE water drain off the safe, then dried it carefully, before he and Seth carried it into the house.
âWhat do you think it weighs?â Stone asked Seth.
âFifty, sixty pounds,â Seth replied.
âCould one man handle it?â
âYou want to try?â
âNope.â
âI reckon a pretty strong fella could handle it. âCourse, he might drop it trying to get it into a boat.â
They got the safe into the study, laid some newspapers on the desk and rested the steel box on top of it, lying on its back. Lance was working away at the computer in Dickâs office.
âThe dial is gone,â Stone said.
Lance spoke up. âThat means they tried to open it, failed, then sawed it out of the cabinet.â
Stone peered at the safe closely. He could see the bolt that locked it through the crack between the door and the jamb. âI donât have a clue how to handle this,â he said.
âSend Dino back in the water to look for the dial,â Lance said. âItâll simplify things.â
Dino was out on the deck, half out of the wet suit. Stone went out and broke the news to him.
âYour turn,â Dino said.
âPut it back on, Dino; youâre the only one the suit fits.â
Dino sighed and began struggling back into the wet suit. âWhat am I looking for
