huh?â
âThatâs it,â Stone said. âAt least weâre sure of which way she went.â He looked down the road. âSouth.â
They got into the car and drove back to the house.
âAny luck?â Sergeant Young asked as they came into the study.
âHolly ran south, then on a straight stretch. She got put into a car, so weâre at a dead end. But at least we know she ran south. Should we concentrate the search there?â
âIn a car, she could have been taken anywhere,â Young pointed out.
âShe could have been taken off the island in a boat, too,â Dino said.
âNone of the others was taken off the island,â Stone reminded him. âI think this guy will stick to his pattern.â
âI need a drink,â Dino said, heading for the wet bar. âAnybody else?â
Stone looked at the group. âEverybody else.â
âI still donât have the after-midnight thermal scan,â Lance said.
Dino came back with drinks on a tray. âHowâs Ginny doing with the diary?â
âSheâll let us know when she gets somewhere,â Ham said.
They sipped their drinks quietly.
âAt least we know the guyâs got a boat,â Stone said. âOtherwise, he wouldnât have dropped the safe in the water trying to get it out of here.â
Sergeant Young, who was staring into his drink but not drinking it, spoke up. âJust about everybody on the island has a boat.â
âYeah,â Stone said, racking his brain for some other thought that might help.
Ginny came down the stairs with the diary and some sheets of paper. Everybody stood up as she walked toward the desk.
âWhat have you got, hon?â Ham asked.
âAre you people drinking?â she asked. âWhy am I not drinking?â
âDino, get the girl some bourbon,â Ham said, looking over her shoulder as she spread out her papers.
âWhat Iâm doing here is working backward through the thing, drying pages one at a time, then trying to read the handwriting. Itâs gorgeous handwriting, but the ink has run from being wet, and that makes it slow going, but Iâm copying out everything I can get and numbering the pages to correspond with the diary.â
âWhat is she saying?â Stone asked.
âWell, itâs mostly high school girl stuff,â she said. âThe last entry is the day before the family got to Islesboro. She mentions that they have to make the five oâclock ferry the next day.â
âIs there any other mention of Islesboro or Dark Harbor in the days before they arrived?â
âSheâs looking forward to going, she says, and right here, she mentions that and says âââ¦especially with X and Y neutralized.ââ
âAny idea what that can mean?â Stone asked.
âThereâs a Z mentioned, too.â
âAre these people male or female?â
âZ seems to be female, but I canât tell about X and Y. These could be friends of hers at school.â
âBut what does she mean by âneutralizedâ?â
âI donât know. âMade harmless,â maybe?â
âHow do you make somebody harmless?â
âTake away their weapons; take away their freedom of action?â
âHow far back have you gotten?â
âJanuary,â Ginny said. âItâs slow going.â
âSheâs glad to be going back to Islesboro, now that X and Y are neutralized,â Stone said. âX and Y must be on Islesboro, too.â
âZ, too,â Ginny pointed out. âShe says that Z will be relieved, too.â
âSo, both Esme and Z would have been anxious about returning to Islesboro for the summer, if X and Y hadnât been neutralized?â
âThat could fit what sheâs saying.â
âDoes she give any hint about why they have to be neutralized?â
âNot so far.â
âGo back further in the diary, Ginny. Go back to last summer, say the month of August.â
âThat part of the diary is in very poor condition,â Ginny said, âbut Iâll try.â She grabbed her drink from Dino and went back upstairs.
âDinner will be ready soon,â Stone called after her. âWeâll let you know.â He sank back into a chair.
A bell chimed in the little office, and Lance got to his feet. âSomething coming in,â he said. âMaybe the new
