driving slowly up the street, looking for a pair of identical giants carrying beer. He was going to keep an eye on these two, and if they did anything funny, he was going to be all over them.
Sergeant Tom Young put his cell phone back into his shirt pocket. âThat was the cop from Nantucket,â he said to Stone.
âThey checked out the yacht?â
âYes. The twins were aboard.â
âSo much for that theory,â Stone said.

S TONE WENT INTO Dickâs little office, where Lance was working on the computer. âThe Nantucket police have verified that the Stone twins are there, on the yacht.â
Lance sighed. âI had hopes for that theory,â he said. He spun around in his chair. âStone, I donât want to talk about this in front of Ham, but I think you know that the chances of finding Holly alive are down to slim and none.â
âI canât think about that, Lance; I just have to keep trying to figure this thing out.â
âI know you feel responsible, but youâre not,â Lance said. âYou told her to go armed.â
âShe did; her gun is not upstairs, and neither is the holster.â
âThen she was incapacitated at the outset, but thatâs not your fault, either.â
âI wish I could feel that way about it.â
Dino called out from the study, âHey, Stone, you and Lance come in here a minute, will you?â
Stone and Lance walked into the study to find Dino and Sergeant Young hunched over the coffee table, looking at Lanceâs thermal images and the sergeantâs map of the island. âWhatâs up?â Stone asked.
Dino tapped the thermal image with his forefinger. âIâm just looking at this house,â he said.
âWhat about it?â
âThis is the image from last night. It shows four people, presumably asleep, in the house, at around three-thirty A . M ., two people in each of two bedrooms.â
âSo?â
âSo, according to Tomâs map, itâs Caleb Stoneâs house.â
âAnd there were four people present last night?â
âLook for yourself. My question is, if the twins are in Nantucket, who are the other two people besides Caleb and his wife?â
âI donât know. Guests maybe?â
âThe twins canât be in two places at once, Dino,â Lance said, âand we have a sighting of them by a police officer on the yacht less than an hour ago.â
âTom,â Dino said, âdo you personally know this Nantucket cop?â
âNever met him,â Young said. âI just phoned his office this morning, and they put me in touch with him.â
âHow did he strike you on the phoneâsharp?â
âNot really. He kept getting things mixed up: the twinsâ names, the name of the yacht.â
âSo, maybe heâs mixed up about the twins being on the yacht.â
Young produced his cell phone and called Potterâs number.
âYeah?â
âLieutenant, itâs Tom Young from the Maine State Police again.â
âYeah?â
âWhen you went down to the boat this morning, did you actually see the twins?â
âAh, no, but the two guys on board said they had just gone for beer. Iâm looking for them now.â
âSo, you didnât sight the twins?â
âNot yet.â
âThanks, Lieutenant.â
âYou think the two guys lied to me?â
âItâs a strong possibility. If you find them, please call me immediately. Good-bye.â Young hung up. âHe didnât see them.â
âIâd like to visit Calebâs house,â Stone said.
âMe, too,â Young replied.
Ham stood up. âIâm coming, too.â
âIâd rather you didnât, Mr. Barker,â Young said. âYou just stay here, and let me do my job. You, too, Stone.â
âAs you wish, Sergeant,â Stone replied.
âIâll call you after Iâve talked to Calebâand his sons, if theyâre there.â
âBe careful,â Stone said.
Young left the house.
âYou shouldnât get too excited about this, Ham,â Stone said.
âNo?â Ham replied. âIf these twins are here, why are they establishing an alibi for themselves in Nantucket?â
âI donât know, but they may actually be in Nantucket, and we still donât have anything to connect them with Holly.â
