to.â Young said good-bye and hung up.
Lance looked up from the computer. âYouâre still pursuing the twins angle?â
âWhat else have I got to pursue?â Stone said.
âGood point. Iâm just reading through the notes of the various agents who checked into the Russian mob threat against Dick.â
âYouâre still pursuing that lead?â
âWhat else have I got to pursue?â Lance asked. âItâs not as implausible as you might think.â
âWell, if itâs true, it means we have two killers: one of Dick and his family and possibly Don Brown, and one of the women.â
âUnlikely, isnât it?â
âBut not impossible,â Stone said.

S ERGEANT YOUNGâS CALL was forwarded to the cell phone of Lieutenant Jake Potter in Nantucket, who was sitting in a squad car in the middle of the village, watching tourists turn their ankles on the cobblestones. âLieutenant Potter,â he drawled into the phone.
âLieutenant, this is Sergeant Tom Young of the Maine State Police.â
âMorning, Sergeant, howâs the weather in Maine today?â
âA little foggy.â
âWhat can I do for you?â
âI donât know if youâve heard about it, but weâve had a series of murders on the island of Islesboro.â
âI read the Boston papers.â
âIn connection with that investigation, Iâm concerned about the whereabouts of two young men, twin brothers, named Eben and Enos Stone. They may be aboard a yacht in Nantucket. They sailed from Newport yesterday.â
âAs part of the race?â
âThatâs right.â
âIf you want me to arrest them weâre going to need a fugitive warrant; you can fax it to us.â
âIt wonât be necessary to arrest them,â Young said. âRight now, I just need to determine whether theyâre actually aboard that boat.â
âDescription?â
âIdentical twins, blond hair, tallâmaybe six-three or six-fourâover two hundred pounds, muscular.â
âWell, Iâm glad I donât have to arrest them.â
Young chuckled. âIt may come to that yet.â
âName of the boat?â
âHotshot.â
âSpell.â
âHotel, oscar, tango, sierra, hotel, oscar, tango.â
âLength?â
âIâm afraid I donât have that information.â
âSkipperâs name?â
âDonât know.â
âHome port?â
âMaybe Newport, but Iâm not at all sure.â
âThat was Eldon and Elmer who?â
âNo, thatâs Eben and Enos Stone. And Lieutenant, if you can find out if theyâre aboard without letting them know youâre checking, Iâd appreciate it. I donât want them to run.â
âWhat do you want me to do if they try to run?â
âIf they do, please try to find out where theyâre going and call me as soon as possible.â Young gave the man his cell phone number.
âI could detain them on some charge or other, maybe dumping their holding tank in the marina.â
âI donât think that would help. Anyway, itâs not their boat.â
âI could think of something else.â
âLieutenant, their father is a big-time Boston lawyer; I donât think that would be helpful. I just need to know if theyâre actually present on Nantucket.â
âTell me, Sergeant, how is knowing that going to help you?â
âWell, if theyâre on the boat, then their alibi for my time frame might be good.â
â Might be good?â
âWeâre talking about a period of four days. They say they were in Newport until yesterday, partying, and the race started yesterday morning.â
âHave you talked to the police in Newport?â
âYes, and theyâre investigating as we speak.â
âAnd you just want to know if theyâre on the boat.â
âI want to know if theyâre on Nantucket. â
âAnd you donât want me to detain them?â
âNo, sir, please donât do that.â
âI guess you want the collar yourself, huh?â
âI donât have enough evidence for a collar. If theyâre on Nantucket, Iâll have even less. If theyâre not on Nantucket, then I may have some basis on which to proceed.â
âWell, Iâll drive down to the marina and have a look
