Theyâre going to check every minute of your last four or five days, and theyâre going to punch holes in your story.â
âWeâve got it covered,â Enos said.
âYou think your friends are going to go on covering for you when they find out what the police want?â
âSure, they will.â
âNo, theyâll be dragged into a police station and told that if they lie for you, theyâre accessories to multiple murders and that accessories get the same sentences as perpetrators. Havenât you watched enough TV to know that? Theyâll crack to save themselves, and when they do, youâll find yourselves in jail, then on trial, thenâ¦â
âYou wouldnât let us lose a trial, would you Dad?â Eben asked. âNot with your legal connections.â
âI canât fix a trial,â Caleb said. âAnd if they have the evidence, youâll be convicted, and youâll spend the rest of your lives in prison.â Caleb saw that he wasnât getting through to them. âTheyâll separate you.â
âWhat?â Enos asked, looking alarmed.
âThey wonât let brothers serve in the same prison; theyâll put you in different places.â
Enos looked as if he were going to cry.
âYouâve got to get out of here and tonight,â Caleb said.
âHow?â Eben asked. âWhere would we go? What would we do for money?â
âI told you, the woman bought her way out.â
âHow?â
âI set up a numbered bank account in Singapore; from there you can transfer funds to any bank in the world just by going online.â
âHow much did she pay?â
âA million two hundred thousand dollars. Itâs already in the account.â He handed them the sheets that Holly had printed. âHereâs all the information.â
The boys held a candle over the pages and read them. âHoly shit,â they said together.
âHereâs what you do: You take my boat and leave here at first light for Rockland. Once there, you take that airplane of yours and fly west, stopping only at small, out-of-the-way airports to refuel. Itâll take you a couple of days, but youâll fly to El Paso or Laredo, on the Mexican border, in Texas. Youâll cross the border, each in a different city, and youâll travel separately to the Mexico City airport. From there, you can fly to Brazil, which has no extradition treaty. You can open a bank account there and transfer enough funds from the Singapore account to support you for a year or so.â
âThen what?â
âYouâll research where else in the world you can go, then start a small business. Even a million two wonât last forever. Take the laptop with you and the cell phone, which is a throwaway. Iâll call you from phone booths every now and then to see how youâre doing and give you advice.
âThe cell phone may not work in Mexico, so buy another one, same in Brazil. Donât linger in Mexico City. Never use your credit cards. Leave them with me. Iâll dispose of them. One of you should grow a beard, and you should both dye your hair different colors. Twins your size are too easy to spot. When you travel on trains or airplanes, never sit together; take different hotel rooms. Donât be seen together in public until youâre safely in Brazil. Your passports are in the computer case.â He took a wad of bills from his pocket. âHereâs eight thousand dollars. That will get you to Rio, then you can draw on the Singapore account.â
Eben took the money. âWhere did you get this?â
âI had a couple of thousand in the safe at the house. Iâve been cashing checks and using ATMs for a week; I knew youâd need some cash.â
âSo, Dad,â Eben said, âyouâve created a paper trail. When they start looking for us, theyâll look at your bank account and see all these unusual cash withdrawals.â
âIâll handle that,â Caleb said.
âAnd how are you going to handle it, Dad? You canât explain those withdrawals; you wonât have the cash to show them. Youâll be just like our friends. Youâll crack, to save yourself, and youâll tell them where to look for us.â
âI would never tell them,â Caleb said. âYouâre my sons; I would never give you up.â
âRemember that time when we ran
