thought so.â
They were quiet for a while.
âDid you think she was attractive?â
âYou got a look at her; what do you think?â
âI think sheâs attractive.â
âWell, I wonât be seeing her again; weâll talk only on the satphone.â
âSatphone sex!â
âScrambled satphone sex!â
They both laughed. They arrived home and got undressed for bed.
âIâve got to call in,â he said to his wife. âAnything you want to pass on?â She was Agency, too.
âNot to Lance Cabot,â she said.
âYouâd better start being nice to him.â
âYou think heâs going to get the job?â
âI think he will if this Holly Barkerâs assignment pans out.â
âWhatâs her assignment?â
âThis is between you and me, okay? Nobody else ever hears about it.â
She fluffed her pillow and got into bed. âOkay.â
âLance sent her down here to find Teddy Fay.â
âYou gotta be kidding.â
âI kid you not.â
âLance thinks heâs still alive?â
âThe Director thinks he might be still alive, and thatâs enough.â
She shook her head. âHang on a minute while I connect the dots.â She was quiet for a moment. âOkay, I canât connect the dots.â
âThe dots run all the way to the president; does that help?â
Her eyebrows went up. âOoooh; reelection!â
âYouâve just connected the dots.â
âWhy donât they just leave well enough alone? Nobody else is looking for him.â
âIâll bet you a blow job the FBI still is.â
âI wonât take that bet,â she said. âTeddy got away from them twice; Director Bob must be pissed off.â
âYeah, and heâs the kind of guy who, once heâs pissed off, stays pissed off, until somebody makes him happy.â
âYou think theyâd arrest Teddy if they found him?â
âMy guess is, not until after the election. After all, it was Will Lee who pulled Director Bob out of the ranks and gave him the big job. The guy must have some sense of gratitude.â
âYouâd think.â
âMs. Barker thinks this guy, Robertson, might be Teddy Fay.â
âThe one you think is the escaped airport bandit?â
âIâm right; I know I am.â
âExcuse me, but arenât you the guy who thought that coffee merchant in Cairo was Osama bin Laden?â
âThat has nothing to do with this. Besides, the guy was very tall. And he had a beard.â
âRight. So tell me why you think Robertson isnât Teddy Fay.â
âInstinct.â
âUh-oh, instinct. You should never follow your instincts, darling. Let me guess, Robertson looks like Teddy.â
âHe looks like the description of Teddy that Lance gave Holly Barker.â
âIsnât that the same thing?â
âMaybe, maybe not.â
âCome on, Billy, use your noodle a little; just consider it. What about Robertson conflicts with whatâs known about Teddy Fay?â
Pepper was silent. âTeddy wouldnât be stupid enough to use an identity that couldnât be confirmed.â
âNothing else, huh?â
âNot much.â
âName some little thing about Robertson that conflicts with his being Teddy.â
âHis identity doesnât check out, okay? All right, nothing else, but nothing conflicts with his being Barney Cox, either.â
âTell me, in your wildest dreams, who would you rather be responsible for bringing in: Barney Cox or Teddy Fay?â
âWell, Barney Cox, of course. If I brought in Teddy Fay, nobody would ever know; Langley would sit on it.â
âLance would know, and if he gets the DDO job, that would be nice.â
âYeah, but only Lance would know, and suppose he doesnât get the job?â
âThe director would know, and that means the president would know.â
âWhy do you think that? You think Lance would tell her if I busted Teddy? Heâd see that he and his acolyte, Barker, got the credit; then heâd get credit for sending her down here. And the director wouldnât tell the president until heâs out of office. He wouldnât want to know a thing like that.â
âYou have a point.â She thought for a moment. âMaybe weâd get a nice transfer out of
