right away, and Iâll talk to you later.â He hung up. âThat was Bill Pepper; Jim Tiptree went to the jail and effected the release of Bill and his wife, but now the police are holding Jim.â
âWhy on earth would they do that?â Lance asked.
âApparently, Jim was sitting on a park bench, talking with Colonel Croft, when his head exploded.â
âSingle shot with an explosive-tipped bullet,â Lance mused.
âYes, but the St. Marks police havenât figured that out yet, and theyâre holding Jim while they mull it over. I have to go back to my office and call the ambassador,â English said, standing. âLance, did you have anything to do with Croftâs assassination?â
âNothing whatever, Hugh; I give you my word. I certainly wouldnât have done such a thing while he was sitting next to your station head, and I donât have anyone on the island who could do it.â
âIâll speak to you later,â English said, and it sounded like a promise.
H ollyâs satphone rang. âYes?â
âScramble.â
Holly did so. âOkay.â
âIâve just heard about Croftâs death in some detail. Apparently, Jim Tiptree, our station head down there, was sitting next to him when it happened. Of course, you didnât have anything to do with this.â
âOf course not; Teddy Fay did it.â
â What ?â
âItâs practically his trademark, isnât it?â
âWell, yes, but what possible motive would Teddy have for killing Croft?â
âFrom what Iâve heard, anybody on the run who wants to live on this island and not be found has to pay off Croft. Maybe Teddy didnât like him, or maybe he just did it on a whim, who knows?â
âIâve got to have time to figure this out,â Lance said, âbut itâs just as well youâre being picked up tomorrow. Iâm sending a larger airplane, and Bill Pepper and his wife are coming back with you.â
âNo,â Holly said.
âWhat do you mean, ânoâ?â
âSir Winston Sutherland has shut down the island; nobody leaves, maybe for days, while Croftâs death is investigated, so you may as well cancel the airplane.â
âSwell,â Lance said.
âYeah, wellâ¦Do I have your permission to get in touch with Bill Pepper?â
âFor what?â
âI want to find out if he got those housing applications of Robertson, Pemberton and Weatherby. They could help us identify Teddy.â
âI suppose so. All right, go ahead and call him on his satphone. He should be home by now.â
âHeâs been released?â
âYes, but theyâre holding Jim Tiptree; itâs a huge mess, and weâre trying to sort it out now. Let me know if youâre sending the photos.â
âAll right; good-bye.â Holly hung up and called Bill Pepperâs number. No answer. She went back to the patio. âStone, can I have the car keys?â
Stone handed them to her. âWhere are you going?â
âWhere we were last night,â she said.
âHang on, Iâm going with you.â

L ance presented himself in the directorâs office for the second time that morning.
âNow what, Lance?â
âThereâs a bit of a flap in St. Marks.â
Kate Lee massaged her temples. âOh, God.â
âLet me explain whatâs happened.â Lance gave her the rundown on Croftâs murder and Tiptreeâs detention.
âWhat a mess,â Kate said.
âIt gets worse,â Lance replied. âHolly Barker thinks Teddy Fay did it.â
âIâm sorry, my mind just boggled; Iâm unable to follow her logic.â
âShe may have a point. First, Croft was shot in the head with an exploding bullet, apparently from outside the Markstown jail building, an expert shot, and that sounds like Teddy. Second, Holly points out that anyone hiding on the island would have to bribe Croft to remain safe, and thatâs a motive for Teddy.â
âCould Teddy know about Bill and Annie Pepperâs arrest?â
âI donât see how he could.â
âI can see him being angry with Croft, if he knew.â
âIf Holly is right, then that settles the question of whether Teddy is on the island. Now we have to find him.â
âYou want to keep Holly there longer?â
âNo, but I
