T hey were eating dessert when a muffled ringing came from Hollyâs handbag.
âThat will be Lance,â Pepper said.
âItâs not our regular time,â Holly said, grabbing her handbag and coming up with the ringing satphone. She walked over to the window for better reception and punched on. âHello?â
âScramble,â Lance said.
Holly punched the button. âScrambled.â
âHolly, first of all, I have news, then I have instructions.â
âIâm listening.â
âLess than an hour ago the director appointed me DDO, to succeed Hugh English, and with immediate effect.â
âI congratulate you, Lance.â
âThank you. Where are you at the moment?â
âAt Bill and Annie Pepperâs house.â
âHave you been discussing Agency business?â
âYes, but Bill swept the house; itâs clean.â
âCan they hear you now?â
âYes.â
âGo to another room.â
Holly looked at the table. âIs that a bedroom?â she asked, pointing at a door.
âYes,â Annie replied.
âMay I use it for a few minutes?â
âOf course.â
Holly went into the bedroom, closed the door and stood by a window. âAll right,â she said.
âIt has become imperative that we identify and locate Teddy Fay immediately.â
âBill has the photos downloaded from government computers on his laptop; itâs being delivered here sometime soon.â
âI want them e-mailed to me instantly as soon as you have them,â Lance said.
âI understand. Do you want me to tell Bill and Annie your news?â
âIâll tell them myself, when weâre done. Have you heard anything about when the travel embargo might be lifted?â
âNo, nothing.â
âIâm going to get you off that island if I have to send a submarine for you,â Lance said.
âYouâre kidding.â
âYes, Iâm kidding, but getting you and the Peppers out is a top priority, right after identifying Teddy.â
âIf we do identify him, what are my instructions then?â
âYour instructions are to wait for further instructions, and only directly from me.â
âWhat instructions are Bill and Annie likely to get from Hugh English?â
âNone whatever; the director has effectively built a wall around Hugh, and he understands that there will be consequences if he breaches that wall. I want to know immediately if you hear that he has so much as spoken to anyone on the island.â
Holly was silent.
âDo you understand? This is critical.â
âI understand.â
âAll right; now let me speak to Bill Pepper.â
Holly walked back into the living room and handed the phone to Pepper. âLance wants to speak with you.â
Pepper took the phone and walked to the window. âYes, Lance?â His expression changed as he listened. âCongratulations,â he said, then resumed listening. âOf course; I hope it will be here soon. Tiptree is having it delivered here. No, I wonât be going back to the office; Iâve already told them that a family emergency requires me to resign and return to the States. Well, Iâll look forward to that. Of course. And again, my congratulations.â Pepper punched off and returned to the table.
âWe have a new boss,â he said to Annie.
âLance?â
âHimself.â
âWhat are our instructions?â
âTo get the photos to him ASAP and to render Holly and Stone any assistance we can in identifying Teddy Fay.â
âSo itâs true?â she asked. âTeddy is still alive?â
âIt seems Lance thinks so,â Pepper said.
âDid you ever meet Teddy?â Holly asked Annie.
âOnce, in passing.â
âDo you think you could recognize him?â
âI doubt it, but anyway, I hear he uses a lot of disguises.â
âI hear that, too,â Holly said. She turned to Pepper. âBill, do you have any opinion on who might replace Croft?â
Pepper shrugged. âWho knows? He has a Haitian assistant, but I donât know if he has the weight to succeed his boss. His name is duBois.â
âWhat do you know about him?â
âHe came from Haiti with Croft, so my assumption is that he is of the same stripe.â
âDo you think duBois is conducting the investigation into Croftâs
