he said. âThey must have taken it when they searched the house.â He went into the living room and removed a picture from the wall, revealing a small safe with an electronic keypad. He tapped in the code, opened the safe, removed a computer disk and rehung the picture.
âThank God,â Holly breathed.
Pepper returned to the dining table, inserted the disk and rebooted. âItâs giving me a choice of start-up sources,â he said. âLetâs try the hard disk; if it wonât boot from the hard disk, then itâs going to have to go to Langley for a recapturing of all the files.â He sat and watched the screen. âSeems to be booting,â he said. âIâm in!â
Holly walked around the table and stood behind him. An encryption page appeared on the screen. Pepper went through three stages of typing in long sequences of numbers and letters, then, finally, the desktop appeared.
âHere we go,â Pepper said. âIâll bring them up side by side.â He hit some more keys. âThere,â he said, âPemberton on the left, Weatherby on the right, Robertson in the middle.â
âWell,â Holly said, âI can tell you that Robertson isnât Teddy. Heâs too young by fifteen years. I donât think Teddy could fake that.â
Stone came and stood next to Holly. âThey look like passport photographs,â he said.
âBritish-sized passport photos,â Pepper replied. âDoes either of the other two look familiar to you, Holly?â
Holly stared at both the photos. Pemberton had a military-style brush mustache, and Weatherby had a Vandyke, with mustache and goatee. âNo,â she said, ânot immediately. Is that a toupee?â she asked, pointing to Pemberton.
âPossibly,â Pepper replied.
âDefinitely,â Stone said. âThe hairline is too low for a man his age. But Weatherbyâs hair looks real enough.â
âGray,â Pepper said. âPembertonâs looks gray, too, but Weatherbyâs is whiter.â
âAbout the same weight,â Holly said, âbut Weatherby seems to have had a broken nose at some point.â
âDid Teddy Fay have a broken nose?â Stone asked.
âNot that I can recall,â Holly said.
âYouâve met Teddy?â Pepper asked, surprised.
âOnce, possibly twice,â she replied. âBoth times disguised.â
âWhat about their chins?â Pepper asked.
âHard to say, since Weatherby has a goatee.â
âEyes?â Stone asked.
âThey both have the wrinkles youâd expect in a man in his sixties,â Pepper said. âThe ears arenât dissimilar, but Pembertonâs stick out more.â
âYouâre right,â Holly said.
âLook,â Pepper said, âweâre not going to be able to analyze these pictures here; itâs time to forward them to Lance; heâll have Tech Services on them immediately.â
Holly shrugged. âI was just hoping weâd catch something that would give us a clue about one of them, something that would help make him Teddy. But there isnât anything.â
âShall I transfer them?â Bill asked.
âCan you print copies?â
âSure, and in color.â
âThen shoot them to Lance.â She watched as Bill sent the e-mails, then printed the photos, handed them to Holly and closed the laptop.
âNothing to do but wait, now,â he said.
L ance sat behind his borrowed desk, watching the faces of a group of a dozen men and women, while Hugh English spoke to them.
âI know youâve all been expecting this at some point, ever since the death of Dick Stone, and now the time has come. A short time ago, the director told both Lance Cabot and me that Lance will be the new DDO, effective immediately. For those who havenât yet met him, Iâm pleased to introduce you all.â He ran through the introductions, while Lance consulted a list of names and photographs on his desk that he had already memorized. When English was done, Lance got up, walked around his desk and sat on its edge.
âIâm very pleased to meet some new people and glad to see again the ones I already know,â he said. âFirst, I want to thank Hugh English for postponing his retirement and so ably continuing in this office until the director had time to make a new appointment. Though I know Hugh is
