you have the facility for DNA analysis available on St. Marks?â
âNot as yet,â duBois replied. âThat will be one of my first requests of my government.â
âI would be very happy to have any evidence you find tested in our labs in New York, if that would be helpful.â
âThank you; I will let you know.â DuBois consulted a list from his pocket. âWhere are your companions, Mr. Barrington and Ms. Heller?â he asked.
âI believe they are touring the island,â Dino said. âThey told us not to wait lunch for them.â
âWhen will they return?â
âIâm not sure, but certainly in time for cocktails; they never miss cocktails.â Dino smiled.
âQuite.â
Dino didnât know what else to say. âI would be happy to inspect the shooterâs roost or the crime scene, if that would be helpful.â
âProbably not,â duBois replied.
âMr. Barrington was also a homicide detective on the NYPD. We were partners for some years. Iâm sure he would be glad to help, as well.â
âWhat about his girlfriend? Is she a police officer, too?â
Dino almost said yes, but remembered. âNo, she is a flying instructor; she owns and operates a small flying school in Florida.â
âYes, I have heard this; did she fly you here?â
âNo, we were fortunate enough to arrive by private jet.â
âAre New York policemen so wealthy, Lieutenant Bacchetti?â
Dino laughed. âOh, no. Mr. Barrington is the one with money. He is a prominent attorney in New York, and an airplane company offered him the ride, with the hope of selling him a jet.â
âAnd will he buy one?â
Dino smiled. âJust between you and me, Mr. Barrington is not that rich, but he neglected to mention that to the salesman.â
DuBois did not smile. A car door slammed behind them.
Dino looked up to see Stone and Holly walking toward them.
âAh,â duBois said, rising, âMr. Barrington and Ms. Heller, I presume.â
âThatâs right,â Stone said.
âGood. You are both under arrest.â He made a motion and the two police officers cuffed Stoneâs and Hollyâs hands in front of them.
âColonel duBois,â Dino said, getting to his feet. âWhy are you arresting my friends?â
DuBois turned and looked at Dino. âLieutenant Bacchetti, I would advise you to mind your own business.â
Dinoâs eyes flicked toward Stone and Holly; he saw a folded piece of paper fall at her feet, and she kicked it under the police car.
âCall the embassy, Dino,â Stone said, as they got into the back of the police car.
The car drove away.
âWhat was that all about?â Genevieve asked.
âI donât know,â Dino said. He walked over to where the police car had been parked and retrieved the piece of paper Holly had dropped. When he unfolded it, he saw the photographs of the three men. âRobertson, Pemberton and Weatherby, I presume,â he said. Then he walked quickly to the phone.

T he phone was answered by a young man. âUnited States Embassy,â he said.
âI donât suppose you would connect me with the CIA station chief, would you?â Dino asked.
There was a brief silence. âSir, what is the nature of your business?â
âPlease give him or her a message,â Dino said. âVirginia Heller and Stone Barrington have just been arrested by a Colonel Marcel duBois of the Home Office, presumably in connection with the murder of Colonel Croft.â
âAnd your name, sir?â
âDino Bacchetti; I am traveling with Ms. Heller and Mr. Barrington.â He gave the man the phone number at the inn. âI believe this to be a secure line,â he said, âsince we disabled the bugs in the telephones. I canât speak for your end.â
âI will pass on the message,â the young man said, then hung up.
J ames Tiptreeâs phone rang, and he picked it up. âThis is James Tiptree.â
âScramble,â a voice said.
Tiptree pressed the button. âScrambled.â
âJim, this is Lance Cabot; we met some years ago in London.â
âYes, Lance, I remember.â
âHave you received cable traffic regarding the replacement for Hugh English?â
Tiptree sat up straighter. âNot yet.â
âYou should shortly. The cable will say that I have
