hands behind his back. She heard a door open behind her.
âWhat is the meaning of this?â a deep voice said.
Holly turned and saw the imposing figure of Sir Winston Sutherland filling the doorway.
âUh, good afternoon, Prime Minister,â she said, rising to her full height and leaving duBois on the floor.
âWhat is this, Marcel?â Sutherland demanded, âsome kind of sex game?â
âColonel duBois lacks charm,â Holly said. âApparently he enjoys beating up women.â
Sutherland stepped into the room and was followed by Stone and another man.
âGinny,â Stone said, âthis is Mr. James Tiptree of the American Embassy.â
âHow do you do?â Tiptree said, looking baffled.
DuBois attempted to get up, but Holly put her foot on his neck. âBe still,â she said.
Sir Winston Sutherland smiled, then began to laugh. Stone laughed, too. Tiptree just shook his head.

S tone and Holly sat in the backseat of a police car, headed back toward the inn.
âWhat the hell happened in there?â Stone whispered.
âNot now,â Holly said.
They sat in silence until they were driven to the inn and deposited at their cottage.
âNow,â Stone said as the police car drove away, âwhat the hell happened in there?â
âI freed myself from the handcuffs, pissed off duBois and, when he came at me, I put him on the floor and cuffed him.â
âSo while Iâm playing the lawyer and demanding to see everybody in authority, youâre beating up the guy who was supposed to beat you up?â
âPretty much.â
âDo you know, I think thatâs what got us released so quickly? Sir Winston just loved it!â
âWhat was he doing there?â
âTiptree, from the embassy, tried to reach him, couldnât, and then, as he arrived at police headquarters, so did Sir Winston. He professed to be shocked, shocked that we had been arrested, and you know the rest.â
âWhy were we arrested in the first place?â
âMy guess is that we were at the top of the list of foreign visitors, so they came after us.â
âDuBois said you were being charged with Croftâs murder, and I was being charged as an accessory.â
âThatâs nonsense; he was just bluffing, and you called him on it. I have to tell you, though, Iâm not sure what duBois would have done to you once he got some help.â
âFunny,â Holly said, âI didnât think about that; I just wanted to humiliate him.â
âHolly, it is not a good policy, when arrested in a foreign country, to humiliate your interrogator. That can lead to electroshock therapy, broken bones and a ruptured spleen. Didnât they mention that to you during your CIA training?â
âNo, we didnât get that far; my training was interrupted by my sudden transfer to New York.â
âOh.â
âThey did say that I would have to return to complete the course, but I think Lance intervened.â
âI think itâs going to be nice to have Lance for a rabbi, now that he has the top operations job. Do you think heâll bring you to Langley or keep you in the field?â
âI havenât the slightest idea,â she replied, âbut I think that my future might be somehow connected to our success or failure in nailing Teddy Fay while weâre here.â
âWhat, exactly, do you mean by ânailingâ?â
âSorry, that should read, âfinding.â I still donât know what happens after that.â
âBill Pepper thinks that either you or he is going to be asked to kill him. Are you ready for that?â
âI certainly am not ready for that; I am not an assassin.â
âWell, weâd better start looking for him.â
âIâd like to shower and change before we do that,â Holly said. âThat jail made me feel dirty.â
They went into the cottage and found Dino and Genevieve watching Tiger Woods play golf on TV.
âHey, youâre alive!â Dino said, embracing them both.
âThanks for calling in the cavalry,â Stone replied. âThey arrived in the nick of time.â He told Dino about what Holly had done to duBois.
âWoman,â Dino said, âyou are lucky to be alive.â
âNo,â Holly said, âduBois is lucky to be alive. Excuse me, Iâm going to shower and
