The Thanatos Syndrome
Pointe Coupée across the river?â
âHow would they go about that?â
She shrugs. âWhenever a routine blood workup was ordered in a hospital, heavy sodium and chloride levels were checked as routinely as blood sugar or NPN.â
âSo?â
âSo Iâm wondering if they still do it.â
âI wouldnât know. I havenât ordered much lab work lately.â
âLetâs find out.â
âAll right.â
âCome over here by me now.â
âIâm by you. Is that a terminal?â
âYes. Now thenââ She consults a little book, punches keys on the keyboard, punches other keys on a small black box, humming a tune, musing and busy. She reminds me of a chatelaine, the ole miss of Pantherburn. Red lights begin to blink on the black box.
The screen lights up with an arcane readout: LADPTPBH and a flashing question mark.
âDo you know what that is?â she asks me.
âLouisiana Department of Public Health?â
âRight, I use âem all the time. Nowââhummingââlet me get the access and user codes.â
âArenât they closed now?â
âThey donât close, dummy. Iâm not talking to people. Iâm talking to their data bank.â Sheâs hitting more keys. The bank must be pleased, lights up with a merry flashing ACCESSED .
âYouâre in?â
âWeâre in. Now to ask the question. Whatâs the question?â
âWe want the mean plasma level of heavy sodium of hospital admissions in Feliciana Parish, say, for this year.â
âWell expressed, wellââ she muses, hitting keys.
The computer utters a sour bleat, flashes SNERROR.
âWhat does that mean? That is, doesnât know or wonât tell?â
âIt means we asked a dumb question.â
âI feel like I flunked a test.â
âThat particular bank has a personality.â
âLike Hal.â
âNo no. Itâs on our side. Hm. Tom, what did we do wrong?â
âHow did you write heavy sodium?â
âAs heavy sodium.â
âTry Na-24.â
âThatâs the atomic weight?â
âYes.â
âSmart.â She hits keys. The thing is pleased, flashes a smiling ACCESS ACCESS ACCESS , then, as if it were thinking things over, waits a second and reads out: 6 mmg., meaning 6 micrograms. The symbol is really 6 µ but I figure this was not practical typographically. We gaze at it blinking. âJesus,â I say.
Lucy looks at me. âWhat does that mean?â
âSix micrograms. That is very little, but any is too much. I suppose it means the mean value of heavy-sodium levels in all hospital blood workups, including positives and negatives.â
âIs it too high?â
âAny number would be too high.â
âBut thatâs very little, isnât it?â
âYes, but too much.â I feel a prickling under the collar of my new Bean shirt. I look at her musing. âWhat else can we ask?â
âWe can ask any terminal any question. Itâs just a matter of framing the question.â
âWell?â She looks at me, hands on keyboard. Sheâs shifted now, from chatelaine to girl-Friday secretary, Della Street waiting for Perry to make up his mind.
âWhat we need is a control.â
âRight.â She waits, smiling.
âLetâs do yours and mine. Have you had a complete physical lately?â
âSure. I had to get one to get this job.â
âYou got it at Fedville?â
âRight. How about you?â
âMe too.â
âAt Fedville?â
âYes.â
âWhen was that?â
âWhen I was arrested by the feds.â
âOf course. I wanted to come see you.â
âIt was not a good time. Can you talk to Fedville now?â
âSure. Iâm on intimate terms with their mainframe. Letâs see. Yours would be about two years ago, right?â
âRight.â
âTwo years. What a waste.â
âWaste of what?â
âGive me your SS number.â
I give it. âCan we get individual readings?â
âWe can get anything we ask for. I have Class One clearance.â
More black book, more punching out the big keyboard, little box, more queries, accesses, OKS. The thing doesnât even pause to think it over this time. Back come the answers. I have the feeling the thing is sitting pleased, waiting
