Traitor's Moon
impossible.â
âNot anymore.â Dismounting with practiced ease, Micum pulled his stick from the bedroll behind his saddle and limped over to his friendâs side. âIdrilain squared things for you. Kliaâs in charge of the whole thing.â
âThereâs no time to lose, either,â Beka urged. âThe warâs going badlyâMycena could fall any day now.â
âWe get rumors, even here,â Alec told her.
âAh, but thereâs worse news than that,â Beka went on. âThe queenâs been wounded and the Plenimarans are pushing their way west every day. Last we knew, they were halfway to Wyvern Dug. Idrilainâs still in the field, but sheâs convinced that an alliance with Aurënen is our only hope.â
âWhat does she need with me?â asked Seregil, handing the unread summons to Alec. âTorsinâs dealt with the Iiaâsidra for years without my help.â
âNot like this,â Beka replied. âKlia needs you as an additional adviser. Being Aurënfaie, you understand the nuances of both languages better than anyone, and you certainly know the Skalans.â
âGiven all that, I could end up with neither side trusting me. Besides which, my presence would be an affront to half the clans of Aurënen.â He shook his head. âIdrilain actually got the Iiaâsidra to let me return?â
âTemporarily,â Beka amended. âThe queen pointed out that since youâre kin to her through Lord Corruth, it would be an affront to Skala to exclude you. Apparently it was also made clear that it was you who solved the mystery of Corruthâs disappearanceâ
âAlec and I,â he corrected absently, clearly overwhelmed by this news. âShe told them about that?â
Before Nysanderâs death he, Alec, and Micum had been part of the wizardâs network of spies and informers, the Watchers. Even the queen had not known of their role in that until he and Alec had helped uncover a plot against her life. In the process, theyâd discovered the mummified body of Corruth à Glamien, whoâd been murdered by Lerans dissenters two centuries earlier.
âI donât suppose it hurt that your sister is a member of the Iiaâsidra now,â said Micum. âWord is that the faction favoring open trade is stronger than ever.â
âSo you see, thereâs no problem with all that,â Beka broke in impatiently. If she had her way, theyâd be riding back down the mountain before sunset.
Her heart sank when Seregil merely stared down at his muddy boots and mumbled, âIâll have to give it some thought.â
She was about to press him when Alec laid a hand on Seregilâs shoulder and gave her a warning look. Clearly, some wounds hadnât healed.
âYou say Idrilain is still in the field?â he asked. âHow badly was she hurt?â
âI havenât seen her. Hardly anyone has, but my guess is itâs worse than anyone is letting on. Phoria is War Commander now.â
âIs she?â Seregilâs tone was neutral, but she caught the odd look that passed between him and her father. The âWatcher look,â her mother called it, resenting the secrets that lay between the two men.
âThe Plenimarans have necromancers,â Beka added. âI havenât met up with any yet, but those who have claim theyâre the strongest theyâve been since the Great War.â
âNecromancers?â Alecâs mouth tightened. âI suppose it was too much to hope that stopping Mardus would put an end to all that. You and your people are welcome to make camp in the meadow tonight.â
âThanks,â said Micum. âCome on, Beka. Letâs get your people settled.â
It took her a moment to realize that Alec wanted time alone with Seregil.
âI expected him to be happy about going home, even if it is only for a little while,â she mused, following her father down the trail. âHe looked as if heâd received a sentence.â
Micum sighed. âHe did, a long time ago, and I guess it hasnât really been changed. Iâve always wanted to know the story behind what happened to him, but he never said a thing about it. Not even to Nysander, as far as I know.â
A pair of otters was frisking on the far bank, but Alec doubted Seregil saw them, or that it was news of the war that had left
