Traitor's Moon
half-breed.â
âI know. Retrace your steps.â Before he could respond, she was gone, disappearing like smoke on the air.
âRetrace my steps?â Alec grumbled. âWhat else have I been doing?â
This time, however, it worked and he found himself back in familiar territory, near the Iiaâsidra chamber. Having nothing better to do, he went in and settled in an inconspicuous corner, watching faces. He watched Torsinâs most closely of all.
He managed to catch Seregilâs attention when the council adjourned for the midday meal. Motioning him outside, Alec walked him quickly into an empty side street.
âFind out anything in Khatme tupa?â Seregil asked hopefully.
âWell, no. Not there.â Steeling himself, Alec plunged into a hurried account of his findings in. Torsinâs room, what heâd seen between Nyal and Amali momentarily forgotten.
Seregil stared a him incredulously, then whispered, âYou burgled
Torsinâs
room? Bilairyâs Balls, didnât I tell you to wait?â
âYes, and if Iâd listened to you we wouldnât have this, would we?â Alec showed him the Virésse tassel. âWhatâs the matter with you? A member of Kliaâs own delegation sneaks out to talk to the enemy and you say wait? Back in RhÃminee youâd have been in there last night yourself!â
Seregil glared at him a moment, then shook his head. âItâs not the same here. This isnât the Plenimarans weâre dealing with. The Aurënfaie are Skalaâs allies in spirit if not in actual fact. Itâs not as if theyâre likely to be plotting her assassination. And Torsin?â
âBut this could be the proof Klia was looking for, about his divided loyalty.â
âIâve been thinking about that. Itâs not sympathy that would make Torsin court Ulanâs favor. Heâs worried that we could lose all by offending the Virésse: not get Gedre, and lose our port in Virésse in the bargain. Still, if he did go behind her back to do itâ?â
âHow did he seem at the Iiaâsidra?â
âAny guilty glances or secret nods exchanged, you mean?â Seregil asked with a crooked grin. âNone that I saw. The one possibility we havenât considered is that he was acting on Kliaâs behalf, and that itâs the rest of us who arenât supposed to know.â
âWell, that brings us right back to my original question. What do we do?â
Seregil shrugged. âWeâre Watchers. Weâll watch.â
âSpeaking of watching people, I saw Nyal and Amali together again early this morning.â
âOh?â This clearly piqued Seregilâs interest. âWhat were they up to?â
âShe was upset about her husband and it was Nyal she turned to.â
âThey were lovers once. Clearly thereâs still a bond there,â said Seregil. âWhat was it she was upset about?â
âI didnât hear everything, but it sounded like this debate is taking a toll on Rhaish.â
Seregil frowned. âThatâs not good. We need him strong. Do you think Amali and Nyal are still secretly lovers?â
Alec thought back over the morningâs scene: Amali clinging to the tall Raâbasi, the anger heâd seen in the manâs face at the mere hint of abuse. âI donât know.â
âI think itâs time we found out, and not just for Kliaâs sake. Letâs see if Adzriel knows more than sheâs been letting on.â
They found Adzriel sitting with Säaban in her colos.
âNyal and Amali?â Säaban chuckled when Seregil broached the subject. âHave you two been gossiping in the taverns?â
âNot exactly,â Seregil hedged. âIâve heard a few rumors, and Nyalâs been showing a lot of attention to Beka Cavish; if heâs leading her on, I mean to take steps.â
âThey were lovers before her marriage to Rhaish à Arlisandin,â Adzriel said. âA sad story, the stuff of ballads.â
âWhat happened?â
Adzriel shrugged. âShe chose duty over love, I suppose, marrying the khirnari of her clan rather than an outsider. But I know sheâs grown to love Rhaish dearly; itâs Nyal who carries the pain of that decision. He strikes me as the sort of man who does not stop loving even when his love is turned away. Perhaps Beka can heal his
