them.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s right. You know it is.”
For a long moment, they stared silently at each other. Sam stroked Bo’s bare back, hoping his touch could somehow make Bo understand how he felt. How much he needed, on a fundamental level, to continue trying to close all the portals he could.
Finally, Bo sighed and snuggled against Sam’s chest. “I can’t talk you out of this, can I?”
Sam kissed his hair. “I’m sorry.”
“So am I. But I think I understand why you feel the way you do.” One of Bo’s hands wandered downward to squeeze Sam’s ass. “Just promise me you’ll always be careful, okay?”
“Always. I swear.” Smiling, Sam wound a strand of Bo’s hair around his finger. “So. It’s still pretty early. What would you like to do?”
“Shower. I’m sticky.”
“Mmm, me too.”
Bo grinned. “Will you wash my back?”
“And your legs, and your chest, and this sexy ass.” Sam smacked Bo’s rear, making him yelp. “I’ll even wash your hair if you want me to.”
“Good, my arms are tired from bracing myself.” Wriggling out of Sam’s embrace, Bo rose somewhat stiffly and hauled Sam to his feet. His arms, Sam couldn’t help but notice, shook just a bit. “Why the sudden generosity? Last time you tried washing my hair, you got your hand tangled up and swore you’d never touch my hair again in any sort of cleanliness ritual.”
“Hey, my hair’s never been past my ears, what do I know about washing something like this?” Sam protested, tugging on a waist-length lock which hung over Bo’s shoulder. “Anyway, I guess I just want to thank you for understanding me.”
Bo’s gaze softened from teasing to tender. Framing Sam’s face in his hands, he pressed close and kissed him. “I’ll always do my best to respect and understand your decisions, even when I don’t agree with them. And I know you’ll do the same for me.”
Sam nodded. Bo’s near death two months before had cured them both of the worst of their stubbornness. They’d tried hard since then to compromise. To talk instead of argue. It didn’t always work, but at least they tried.
“We’re getting better at this, aren’t we?” Sam asked as they joined hands and started toward the bathroom. “This relationship thing, I mean.”
“We are, yes.” Bo glanced at him and squeezed his hand. “I’m looking forward to spending the rest of my life learning how to get along with you, Sam. You’d better not let one of those portals spoil my plans.” “I won’t. I promise.”
Bo stared at him for a moment, searching and serious. Then he smiled, kissed Sam’s fingers and led him into the bathroom.
I’ll always be there for him, Sam swore to himself, watching Bo turn on the shower. I won’t let those things take us away from each other.
He only hoped he would be able to hold to his silent vow. He had no illusions regarding the danger he would face—the danger they would all face—the next time they encountered one of the portals. The way the old bite on Bo’s leg had flared up around the area where the portal had been still worried him. If the lingering energy of a closed gateway affected the injury that much, what would an active portal do to it? The possibilities made Sam’s stomach knot.
Bo stepped into the shower and held out a hand to Sam. “Come on, Sam. You promised to wash me.”
The not-so-subtle seduction in Bo’s voice succeeded in pushing Sam’s worries to the back of his mind. Smiling, he took Bo’s hand and let himself be pulled into heat and steam, and his lover’s welcoming arms.
