Winter of the Ice Wizard
wait!â Jack called. But Annie had already disappeared into the sparkly room. âWe have to follow her,â he said to Teddy and Kathleen.
The three of them hurried after Annie. Beyond the columns, steps made of carved ice led up to a platform. Sitting on a throne on the platform was a huge bearded man.
The man on the throne was definitely
not
Merlin. He was dressed in a worn robe trimmed with dirty fur. He had a rugged, weather-beaten face, a bushy beard, and a black eye patch. He leaned forward and glared down at Annie with his one good eye.
âWho are
you
?â he demanded. âI was expecting Jack and Annie of Frog Creek.â
Annie stepped toward the throne. âI am Annie and heâs Jack,â she said. âAnd these are our friends Teddy and Kathleen. We come in peace.â
âAnnie? Jack?â
the man snorted. âYou are not Annie and Jack! You are far too small!â
âWeâre not so small,â said Annie. âIâm nine. Jackâs ten.â
âBut you are
children,
â the man said with scorn. âJack and Annie are heroes!â
âWell, I donât know if Iâd call us heroes,â said Annie. âBut we sometimes help Merlin and Morgan le Fay.â
âAnnie, shhh!â said Jack. He didnât trust the man on the throne and worried that Annie was saying too much.
But Annie went on. âIn fact, Merlin told us to come to the Land-Behind-the-Clouds today,â she said. âHe sent us a message written on a stone.â
âAh â¦Â ,â said the man on the throne. âPerhaps you really are Jack and Annie.â He leaned forward and spoke in a low voice:
To Jack and Annie of Frog Creek:
My Staff of Strength has been stolen. On the winter solstice, journey to the Land-Behind-the-Clouds. Travel toward the setting sun and retrieve my staffâor all will be lost.
Jack didnât understand. âHow â¦Â ?â
âHow do I know what was in Merlinâs message?â the man said. âI know because I wrote itmyself! I hoped it would find its way to you somehow.â
Jack stepped back. So Merlin hadnât sent them on this mission at all. The weird man on the throne had tricked them!
âWho are you?â demanded Teddy.
âI am the Ice Wizard,â said the man. âThe Wizard of Winter.â
Teddy gulped.
Oh, no!
thought Jack. They had heard about this wizard on their past Merlin missions. It was the Wizard of Winter who had put a spell on the Raven King and who had stolen the Sword of Light!
The wizard glanced coldly from Teddy to Kathleen. âAnd who are the two of you?â
âI am Teddy of Camelot,â said Teddy. âI am an apprentice to Morgan le Fay, in training to be a sorcerer myself.â
âA sorcerer?â said the wizard.
âYes,â said Teddy. âMy father was a sorcerer. My mother was a wood sprite.â
âAnd I am a selkie,â said Kathleen, âone of the ancient seal people.â
âSo you are both from
my
world,â said the Ice Wizard. âYou are of no use to me.â He looked back at Jack and Annie. âI am interested only in the two mortals, Jack and Annie of Frog Creek.â
âWhy are you interested in us?â said Jack.
âBecause of what you have done for Merlin!â bellowed the Ice Wizard. âFor Merlin, you found the Water of Memory and Imagination! For Merlin, you found the Diamond of Destiny! For Merlin, you found the Sword of Light! Now I want you to find something for
me.
â
âWhat do you want us to find?â asked Annie.
The Ice Wizard grabbed the black patch covering his left eye. He yanked it off, revealing a dark, empty socket underneath.
âYikes,â Annie said softly.
âI want you to find my eye,â the Ice Wizard said.
âOh, man,â said Jack. He was horrified.
âAreâare you quite serious?â said Teddy. âYou want them to find your
eye
?â
The wizard covered his empty eye socket with the patch again. âYes,â he said. âI want Jack and Annie to find my eyeâand bring it back to me.â
âButâwhy?â said Jack. âEven if we found it, we couldnât make it work. Weâre not medical experts or anything.â
âAnd anyway, why canât you get your eye yourself?â said Annie. âYouâre a wizard!â
âDO NOT QUESTION MY
