Winter of the Ice Wizard
beautiful girl he had ever seen. Even when sheâd been a seal, sheâd been lovely.
âWe went looking for you!â said Teddy. âWe climbed down and walked through the woods to a road.â
âBut the road was full of monsters!â said Kathleen. âA big red creature nearly ran over us! It made a honking sound!â
âThen before we knew it, a giant black monster charged at us! It had a ferocious growl!â said Teddy. âWe came back here to gather our wits.â
âThose werenât monsters!â said Annie, laughing. âThey were just cars!â
âCars?â said Teddy.
âYeah, they have motors and people drive them,â said Jack.
âMotors?â said Teddy.
âItâs hard to explain,â said Annie. âJust rememberâin our world, you have to watch out for cars every time you cross a road.â
âIndeed we will,â said Teddy.
âWhy have you come here?â asked Jack.
âWe found a message for you in Merlinâs chambers,â said Teddy, âand decided to deliver it ourselves.â
âSo we climbed into the tree house outside Morganâs library,â said Kathleen. âTeddy pointed to the words
Frog Creek
in the message and made a wish to come here. The next thing we knew, we were here in these woods.â
Teddy pulled a small gray stone from his cloak. âAnd
this
is the message we brought you,â he said.
Jack took the stone from Teddy.
The message was written in tiny handwriting. Jack read it aloud:
âOh, wow,â said Annie. âThat sounds serious.â
âYeah,â said Jack. âBut why didnât Merlin send us the message himself?â
âWe do not know,â said Teddy. âNeither Merlin nor Morgan has been seen for days.â
âWhere did they go?â asked Annie.
â âTis a mystery,â said Teddy. âLast week I journeyed to the selkie cove to bring Kathleento Camelot. She is going to be a helper in Morganâs library. But when we returned, we could not find Merlin or Morgan.â
âWe only found this message for you,â said Kathleen.
âAye, and I thought that when Merlin
does
return,â said Teddy, âhe will be greatly pleased to have his staff back. Much of his power comes from its ancient and mysterious magic.â
âWow,â said Annie.
âIn his message, he tells us to go to the Land-Behind-the-Clouds,â said Jack. âWhereâs that?â
â âTis a land far north of my cove,â said Kathleen. âI have never journeyed there.â
âNor I,â said Teddy. âBut I have read about it in Morganâs books. âTis as bleak as a frozen white desert. I am eager to see it for myself.â
âSo you and Kathleen are coming with us?â said Annie.
âIndeed!â said Kathleen.
âGreat!â said Jack and Annie together.
âIf we all work together, we can do anything, aye?â said Teddy.
âAye!â said Annie.
I hope so,
thought Jack.
Annie pointed at the words
Land-Behind-the-Clouds
in Merlinâs message. âOkay, ready?â she said to the others.
âYes!â said Kathleen.
âI guess so,â said Jack.
âOnward!â said Teddy.
âI wish we could all go there!â Annie said.
The tree house started to spin.
It spun faster and faster.
Then everything was still.
Absolutely still.
J ack felt the sharp bite of an icy wind. He looked out the window with the others. âOh, man,â he whispered.
The tree house was not in a treeâfor there were no trees anywhere to be seen. Instead, it was sitting high on top of a steep snowdrift. Other drifts rose and fell across a vast snowy plain. Beyond the plain were hills and mountains.
âThe books were right,â said Teddy, his teeth chattering. â âTis bleak here indeed.â
âNo, âtis lovely,â said Kathleen. â âTis the land where the northern seal people live.â
âCool,â said Annie.
Jack dug his hands into his pockets. He agreed with Teddy. The land did seem bleakâand freezing! âI wonder where Merlinâs Staff of Strength is,â he said, shivering.
âLet us begin our search!â said Kathleen. âThe message tells us we must travel toward the setting sun.â
Kathleen climbed out of the tree house window. She gathered her
