An Inner Darkness
Wanting to soothe away the pain in Bo’s deep brown eyes, Sam cupped Bo’s cheek in one palm and kissed him. The sweet, familiar sigh Sam loved slipped from Bo’s lips as they parted for Sam’s tongue.

“It’ll be all right,” Sam whispered when the kiss broke. He ran his thumb over Bo’s plump lower lip. “Sean and Adrian know how much you love them. They know you’re always there for them when they need you.”

“I always thought so. God knows I’ve tried to show them that.” A vast sadness welled up in Bo’s eyes. “But neither of them has ever said a word about this. Not one word. Why is that, if they really trust me to listen to them and help them? Wouldn’t they have told me?” “You know how Janine is about stuff like that. She probably already has them trained never to mention it. She’s probably told them it’s their imagination and threatened to punish them if they say anything.”
    “I guess.”
Bo didn’t sound as if he believed it. Right then, Sam hated Janine more than he ever had.
Picking up Bo’s waist-length black braid, Sam pulled it over Bo’s shoulder and let it run like a thick, silken rope through his hand. “You know I’m right. Sean and Adrian both adore you. They’re always excited to be with you, and you know as well as I do that they both confide in you way more than they do in Janine. Remember last month, when Sean told you about his ‘girlfriend’ and didn’t tell Janine? Or when Adrian asked for your help with his science project because, and I quote, ‘you’re better at that stuff than Mom’?
Or when they got up early and made you breakfast in bed for your birthday?” Bo’s eyes narrowed. “You’re trying to make me feel better.” “Everything I just said is perfectly true.”
“Sam.”
“Okay, so I’m using the truth to make you feel better.” Sam grinned. “Is it working?”
“Yes.” A soft smile curved Bo’s mouth. “You’re quite an observant guy, Sam.”
“I am. Keen eye for detail and all that.”

“Hm. I see.” Bo kissed Sam’s throat, his chin, the corner of his mouth. “Can your keen eye observe how grateful I am to have you in my life?” “Definitely.” Sam let out a breathy moan as Bo’s lips brushed the shell of his ear.
“And the feeling is mutual, by the way.”
“Good.” Drawing back, Bo gazed straight into Sam’s eyes. “Thank you, Sam. I really do feel a lot better about things now.” “I’m glad.”
“Kiss me again?”
Smiling, Sam tilted his head and met Bo’s lips with his. Bo melted against him, fingers buried in his hair.
In the back of his mind, Sam knew the upcoming case would be one of the most difficult they’d ever tackled, and not for any of the usual reasons, but he couldn’t be bothered to worry about it. Not now. Not with Bo in his arms, kissing him with a passion that made his knees weak.
Tomorrow, they’d face what they needed to face, together. Right now, everything was just as it should be.

Chapter Four
Sam glanced at the time display on his computer monitor. Six fifteen. More than two hours since Bo and Andre had gone to help Lee break the news of the investigation to Janine.
“They should’ve been back by now,” Sam said, swiveling his chair to frown at the closed front door of the BCPI office. “It ought not to take this long.” “Which ‘they’?” David asked without turning from the case report he was typing.
Dean and Cecile were out doing a follow-up visit to the site of a previous case—a poltergeist haunting, the first real one Sam had ever seen—and had yet to return. Danny had gone home an hour ago, leaving Sam and David alone in the office. David had been hard at work on his case report ever since, and the lack of conversation was doing not a damn thing to calm Sam’s frazzled nerves.
“Bo and Andre.” Sam glanced at his case report, still open on the computer screen.
He needed to finish the thing, but he couldn’t keep his mind on it. “I wonder what’s going on?”
“They’re dealing with Janine,” David reminded him. “You know she’s going to be as big a pain in the ass as she can.”

“I know.” Sighing, Sam stood and walked over to the refrigerator in the corner. “You want a drink?”
“We got any Mountain Dew?”
    Sam checked. “Yeah.” He pulled
