there stewing in angst.”
    Sam snorted. “Ass.”
“Oh, so that’s why you’re so anxious for Bo to get back. You want some ass. ” David slugged Sam in the shoulder. “You horn dog.”
“David, stop being childish.” Moving to Sam’s side, Cecile took his hand and squeezed it. “Are you sure you’re okay alone, Sam?” Before Sam could answer, the door banged open, making all three of them jump. Bo stormed in, cheeks red and eyes snapping. “One day, that fucking woman is going to drive me around the fucking bend.”
“So it didn’t go well, huh?” David guessed.

“It could’ve been a lot worse, really. She’s just so damn frustrating.” Sighing, Bo perched on the edge of Danny’s desk and rubbed a hand over his eyes. “God, I’m tired.”
“We can head on home, if you want.” Setting his partially finished juice beside his computer, Sam stood, leaned over the desk and started massaging the tension out of Bo’s upper back. “I’m almost done with my case report. I can finish it up in the morning.” Bo gave Sam a wan smile over his shoulder. “I’d like that.”
“Aren’t you going to tell us what you worked out with Janine about the investigation?” Cecile frowned. “And where’s Andre?”
“He dropped me off here and went on. He promised to baby-sit for his sister tonight.” Bo shifted sideways to face Sam. “We’re starting the investigation at Lee and Janine’s place on Friday night. Sean and Adrian are both staying over with friends that night. We’ll go back on Monday during the day, when the kids are in school.” David’s eyebrows went up. “So she only wants us to be there when the boys aren’t?” 34

Bo grimaced. “Sort of.”
An ugly feeling settled in Sam’s gut. He suspected David was right, and Sam himself was the main reason Janine didn’t want the boys around during the investigation.

Cecile cleared her throat. “Okay. Well, David and I are going home. See y’all in the morning.”

Sam murmured his goodbyes along with Bo. David clapped Sam on the shoulder before grabbing his jacket and following Cecile outside. The door clicked shut, leaving Sam and Bo alone in a heavy silence.

“Are you going to tell me what she said?” Sam asked when Bo failed to offer any information.

“She doesn’t want you around the boys during the investigation.” One corner of Bo’s mouth hitched up in a bitter smile. “Unfortunately, I know that’s no surprise to you.”

“No, it isn’t.” Rising to his feet, Sam walked around the desk and pulled Bo up as well. “What do we have to work with here? Am I even allowed to participate?”
    “Yes.”
Sam blinked, surprised. “Really?”
“Yes, really.” Bo let out a sharp laugh. “If Janine had had her way, you wouldn’t be.
But I told her we need the full team, which I believe we do, and Lee backed me up.”
“So what are the limitations?”
“She agreed to let you come with us Friday night, but that’s it so far. I asked Lee to talk to her and try to convince her that I want you with us on this because you’re an important part of the BCPI team, not because you’re my lover. He said he’d try.” Bo wound his arms around Sam’s waist, his expression apologetic. “I’m sorry, Sam. I would’ve changed her mind if I could, but you know there’s only so much I can do. It is her house. Well, half hers, anyway.”
“I know.” Forcing a smile, Sam looped his arms around Bo’s shoulders and pulled him close. “Hey, at least I’m going the first night. That’s more than I expected, to be honest.”

“Lee’s a good influence on her.” Bo tilted his head to plant a kiss on Sam’s lips.
“When we were married, she never would’ve given even an inch. I got the distinct feeling the only reason she did this time is because Lee wanted her to.”

“Hm.” Sam returned the kiss, with a hint of tongue this time. “I may have to reevaluate my opinion of the guy.”

“I agree.” Bo pressed closer, his thigh sliding between Sam’s legs to lodge against his groin. “Let’s go home, Sam. It’s been a long day, and I really just want to curl up in bed with you right now.”

“That sounds like a plan to me.” Sam rubbed his crotch on Bo’s leg. “You want to stop and get take-out, or you want me to make soup and sandwiches?” Bo’s hand slid into Sam’s hair. He pressed his cheek to
