the room suddenly felt so heavy, the bulb in the lamp beside him exploded with a pop. Shards of glass pinged against the wooden floor.
Adrian leaped to his feet, his face stricken. “ Now look what you made me do!” Without waiting for an answer, he ran into his and Sean’s bedroom and slammed the door behind him.
A stunned silence fell. Sam stared at the lamp for a moment, then turned to look at Bo. The color had leeched from Bo’s face. His gaze caught Sam’s, and Sam knew they were thinking the same thing.
Maybe Lee and the boys weren’t imagining things after all.

Chapter Six
Since Adrian refused to come out of his room, Bo went in. Adrian protested, but as the door had no lock he didn’t have much choice in the matter. Sam busied himself cleaning up the broken glass and changing the bulb in the lamp.
Bo had left the bedroom door open, and Sam tried not to listen to Bo’s increasingly ragged pleas for Adrian to talk to him. Hearing Bo’s control erode under his son’s obstinate silence made Sam’s heart ache.
By the time Bo gave up and left Adrian alone, Sam had swept the kitchen and living room and washed the dishes, and was starting to wonder how in the hell he was supposed to keep himself occupied if Bo stayed in there any longer. His relief at seeing Bo emerge from the bedroom evaporated when he caught sight of Bo’s expression. He looked frightened and defeated.
Hurrying forward, Sam gathered Bo into his arms and held him tight. Bo clung to him, face buried in his neck and both fists clenched in the back of his shirt. “What happened?” Sam murmured, stroking Bo’s hair. “Is he okay? Are you okay?”

“I don’t know, Sam. I just don’t know.” Bo lifted his head to meet Sam’s gaze. “He won’t talk to me. I think he might be psychokinetic like you, and I know you’re thinking the same. But how in the hell am I supposed to figure it out if he won’t tell me anything?” 58

Sam stroked his thumb across Bo’s forehead, trying to smooth the worried crease from between his eyes. “Do you want me to try talking to him? I mean, I know he doesn’t like me, but maybe in this case he’ll be willing to talk to me since I’ve experienced similar things.” Hope lit Bo’s eyes. “That’s true. Would you try?”

“Of course I will,” Sam promised, ignoring the way his stomach lurched at the thought. “If he really is having latent psychokinesis emerge, I’ll do anything I can to help him deal with it.”

Letting go of Sam’s shirt, Bo cradled Sam’s face in both hands and leaned their foreheads together. “Thank you, Sam,” he whispered. “I love you so much.” Sam’s throat went tight. Tilting his head, he planted a tender kiss on Bo’s mouth. “I love you too.”

He felt Bo’s lips curve into a smile. They kissed again, a little longer this time, a little deeper, and Sam wished they were alone. He shoved the thought away. Now wasn’t the time.
When the kiss broke, Sam reluctantly drew out of Bo’s embrace. “I’ll go try to talk to Adrian now. Wish me luck.”
“Good luck.” Bo gave Sam’s hand a squeeze before letting go.
Squaring his shoulders, Sam paced across the floor and down the short hallway to the boys’ room. The door hung halfway open. Sam rapped his knuckles against the wood.
    “Adrian? Can I come in?”
Silence. “Whatever,” Adrian mumbled a couple of endless seconds later.
Sam shot a swift glance back at Bo, who gave him an encouraging smile. Hoping he wasn’t about to fuck things up beyond repair, Sam pushed the door open and walked inside.

Adrian lay curled on his bed, both hands tucked beneath his chin. He looked even younger than he was, small and scared and vulnerable, and Sam’s heart went out to him.

As difficult as the boy could be at times, he was only a child. An eleven-year-old, trying to cope with an ability which would be overwhelming for someone three times his age.

Sam perched on the end of Adrian’s bed, wondering how to start. Obviously, Adrian himself believed he’d made the light bulb explode. He hadn’t seemed surprised, either, which made Sam think the boy already knew he might be causing some—if not all—of the strange events at Lee and Janine’s house.
The direct approach worked before. It seems to be the best way to reach him.
Sam cleared his throat. “So. What
