until Sean and his friends were outside, so the party wasn’t ruined for him. I think he got what he wanted.” Sam rubbed his fingertips in soothing circles against Bo’s hip where his hand rested.
    “What were y’all fighting about?”
“How’d you know we were fighting?”
“Adrian told me. But I would’ve assumed you’d fought anyhow. You always do.” Bo let out a harsh laugh. “I wish you were wrong, but you’re not.” “So what was it about?”

For a few moments Bo was silent, staring out at the yard where his youngest child was playing. When he spoke, his voice was soft and sad. “She tried to take the boys back home with her and Lee.”

Sam tightened his arm around Bo and counted to ten in his head. “She and Lee took Sean out for a birthday dinner last night, plus they got to come to the party here. It’s your weekend to have the kids. She knows that. What the hell’s her problem?”
“Honestly? I have no clue. I’m tempted to say she hates us, but I don’t think that’s it.”
Sam snorted. “Well, she’s doing a great imitation of hating us, then.”
“Yes, but I just don’t think that’s it.”
“Maybe she’s just homophobic.”
“No, I don’t think that’s it either.”
Sam gave Bo an incredulous look. “Are you serious? After all the things she’s said about us being perverted?”
“Well, yes, I know she spouts off all the time about the evils of homosexuality, but I don’t think it’s that so much as the fact that she essentially lost out to you. She hasn’t had any real feelings for me for years now, she just hates to lose what she sees as hers to someone she thinks doesn’t deserve to have it.” It made sense. Sam nodded. “Okay, I can buy that.” Sighing, Bo snuggled closer to Sam’s side. “I guess I shouldn’t have lost my temper with her in there, but God she makes me so fucking angry.”
“What did you say to her?”
“I told her it was our weekend with them and I wouldn’t let her take them. She trotted out all the usual arguments and threats, and I dug out the papers we’d both signed allowing me to keep the boys every other weekend and waved them in her face.” Bo snorted. “It sort of went downhill from there.”
“That explains why she was so furious this time. Not that she isn’t always.” Bo turned to look at Sam with a frown. “Did she say something to you?” www.samhainpublishing.com 15

“She implied that I’d corrupted you with my evil gay ways, that our relationship is sick and perverted, and that I’m responsible for your past injuries.” Sam gave Bo a grim smile. “Just the usual.”
Bo did not look amused. “And what did you say?”
“I told her that you and I are together now and she’d better get used to it, and that I never wanted to hear her call us perverted again.” Sam scratched his chin. “I probably shouldn’t have reminded her that you’re not her husband anymore. It just pissed her off even more. But it just sort of came out.”
    “I’m sure she loved that.”
“Oh yeah.”
At that moment, Sean detached himself from the huddle of children and ran over to Bo and Sam. “Dad, I wanna go get pizza! Can we?” Laughing, Bo ruffled Sean’s hair. “Didn’t you just have pizza last night?”
“Yeah, but it was at that fancy place Mom likes.” He wrinkled his nose. “It had peppers and mushrooms and those are gross . I like just plain pepperoni.” Grabbing Bo’s shirt in both hands, Sean gazed up at him with a pleading expression. “I wanna go to Pizza Palace Arcade and drive the car! Please, Dad?” Sam stifled a laugh. Every time the boys came over, Sean begged his father for a trip to the huge new Pizza Palace on Airport Road. He’d fallen madly in love with the simulated race car game in the restaurant’s gigantic arcade.
“All right.” Bo patted Sean’s cheek. “After the party’s over and your friends have gone home, we’ll get the apartment cleaned up, then we’ll go to Pizza Palace for dinner.
    Okay?”
“Okay. Thanks, Dad.” Beaming, Sean bounded across the yard to rejoin whatever game he and the other boys were playing.
“You’re so easy,” Sam murmured, sliding his hand down to give Bo’s ass a quick squeeze. “He gives you that little puppy-dog look, and you just cave.” Bo arched an eyebrow at him. “Pot. Kettle.”
