Kate Daniels 02 - Magic Burns
Iâll be up by tomorrow.â
âAnd Jim?â
âWhich one is Jim?â
âThe jaguar.â
âHeavy muscle damage,â Andrea said. âLigaments all torn to shreds. Heâs in the next room.â
I felt like scum. If I stayed any longer, I would scream.
Andrea looked at me from the sheets. âIt was a good plan. Curran creates a distraction, occupies them while they key on him, and we grab the girl. Except those bitches wouldnât die and we failed.â
âYou tried.â That was more than I did.
âKate, I know what youâre thinking. Youâre thinking that if you had watched Julie, she wouldnât have left with Red and we wouldnât be in this mess.â
What? âNo. Not at all.â
âI just want you to know: when I took her off that cross, she was calling his name. Neither you nor I can do anything to break whatâs between them.â
âAndrea, I donât blame you. I donât blame anyone.â Except myself. âYou went out there and tried against impossible odds and almost won, while I played footsie with Bran in the mist.â
I rose. âIâm going to see Jim and then Iâll see about sending a runner to the Order, since the phones are dead.â
She raised her head from the pillow, her eyes wide. âWhy?â
After Bran had run out of curses, heâd condescended to explain a few things to me. âFrom what Bran says, the gray bubble Morfran made is some sort of ancient druidic ward. Morfran is buying time and working the cauldron, packing the sea-demons into that bubble. When it bursts, they will spill out onto the Honeycomb and then onto Warren. Weâll need the knights and MSDU.â
Her face fell. âThere will be no help, Kate. Everyoneâs gone. Even Maxine.â
âWhere the hell did they go?â
âThereâs an emergency,â she said softly. âAll the knights and the Military Supernatural Defense Units are being pulled to counter it.â
âAndrea, in less than twelve hours, Atlanta will be full of demons. They will kill, feed, and release more demons. What emergency is more important than this one?â
She hesitated. âIâm not supposed to disclose this. Thereâs a man. His name is Rolandâ¦â
I almost punched the wall. âWhat is he doing thatâs so damn crucial? What, is he building another tower? It will fall like all his other ones. Or did his eye finally grow back and he decided to have a battle to celebrate?â
Andrea gently closed her muzzle. âKate? How do you know that?â
Shit.
âEven I donât rank high enough to know about the eye and the towers. I was only told because I would be staying behind alone. Youâre not even a knight. How do you know this?â
How do I fix this? I have to kill her. Wait, I canât kill her. Sheâs my friend.
âAre you planning on walking into Tedâs office after the flare and telling him that youâre beastkin?â
She winced. âNo. Heâd throw me out. The Order is all I know.â
I nodded. âYou have your secrets and I have mine. I didnât say anything about Roland and you didnât hear anything.â I offered her my hand. âDeal?â
She hesitated only for a moment. Her fingers grasped mine and I was relieved by their strength. âAnd Iâm not a beastkin. Deal.â
I found Jim in the next room. He sat in the bed, propped up by a pillow, and sharpened a short thick knife with a whetstone.
âYou fucking owe me.â He showed me his teeth in an ugly snarl. âYou had a beastkin buddy. Didnât tell me. Made me look like I donât know my business. Made me look like a fool.â
I came in and sat on the edge of his blanket.
âGet the fuck off my bed.â
I sighed. âHow are the legs?â
âDoc says Iâll be walking by tomorrow.â He pointed the knife at me. âDonât change the fucking subject.â
The same injury would take at least two weeks to heal during normal magic.
âYou remember that time you put a rat scout into an apartment above me to spy on me and Crest?â The scout who had heard everything that went on between me and Crest.
âWhat about him?â
âWeâre even.â
He shook his head and went back to sharpening his knife.
âYou still here?â he asked a few seconds later.
âLeaving as we
