Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
just a guy, is all. I never been in here before in my life.â
âHowâd you happen to come in today?â Frankie said.
âLooking for you,â Cogan said. âI was looking for you and a guy told me, he said you told him you come in here a lot, âround this time of day, see if you can get up nerve enough, talk to a girl. So I came in. Simple, huh?â
âWhoâs the guy?â Frankie said.
âJust a guy,â Cogan said, âguy, a friend of yours, actually. Knows a little about you, told me where to look you up. Well, he didnât tell me himself. He told a guy, and the guy was up here and he told me. Because I asked the guy, this friend of yours.â
âWhoâs this friend?â Frankie said.
âChina,â Cogan said.
âNever heard of nobody by that name,â Frankie said. He finished his beer and started to straighten up.
Cogan put his right hand on Frankieâs right arm. âChinaâll be surprised to hear that,â he said, âvery surprised. Hereâs a guy, concerned about you, your friendsâre concerned about you, you know that, Frankie? Theyâre worried. Guys like China. China was really, he, well, he in
sis
ted I hadda go and talk to you, is what he did. I wasnât sure I oughta bother you, you know? Got yourself a place and everything? âSounds like heâs doing all right to me,â is what I said. âNo reason I should go around and bother him.â You have got a place, havenât you, Frankie?â
âYeah,â Frankie said.
âSomewhere south of New Hampshire, I bet,â Cogan said.
âRight onna peg,â Frankie said.
âNorwood, to be exact,â Cogan said. âWhyâd you do that, alla them trucks?â
âI dunno,â Frankie said.
âNow whynât you relax a little, Frankie, okay?â
Cogan said. âYou know how it is when a guy, when China wants a guy to do something, you got to do it, is all, Chinaâs all down there, locked up and everything, heâs gotta depend on his friends, do the right things for guys heâs worried about. Iâd be embarrassedin front of China, I hadda tell him, he ever found out, a guy he wanted me to talk to, I didnât talk to him. You know how China is.â
Frankie leaned back again.
âHave another beer,â Cogan said. âLook at the girls. Jesus, I dunno how you can stand the noise out there. Still, I suppose, guys got all kinds of reasons for doing things. Gotta car, too, I understand.â
âYeah,â Frankie said.
âLemme give you some advice, all right?â Cogan said.
Frankie did not answer.
âI had one of them things myself,â Cogan said, âthey first come out. You got the hood scoops, right?â
Frankie did not answer.
âAh, come on,â Cogan said, âyou got the green Geetoh with the scoops. Donât fuck around with me, right?â
Frankie nodded.
âYouâre gonna have trouble with it,â Cogan said, âcouple months or so. January, when it gets cold. Fuckinâ thing wonât run. Itâll start but it wonât run. You can do anything you want to it, it wonât run, and when itâs really cold, down around seven, eight below, it wonât start.
âNow lemme tell you what you got to do,â Cogan said. âYou got to pack them scoops. Mine just had the one, the split one in the middle. But, well, you got the two, I bet youâre still gonna have the same trouble, the car just wonât warm up. Youâre gonna have to pack them scoops. Itâs the scoops. Your engine canât get warm in that thing when itâs cold unless you run it about ninety miles an hour the minute you get her going, and you do that, youâre gonna bend a fuckinâ valve, is all. What I used to do, I used to put maskingtape right over them scoops. Looks like hell, but it works. Got that? Masking tape.â
Frankie nodded.
âYou see what I mean,â Cogan said.
âUh,â Frankie said, âuh, no. No, I donât.â
âYour friends,â Cogan said. âYour friendsâre worried about you. See? I even heard, youâre carrying.â
âFuck, no,â Frankie said.
âWell,â Cogan said, ânow, thatâs good. Because, you wanna be careful about that. You, what, you been out a month?â
âSix weeks,â Frankie said.
âRight,â
