Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
tell you that. But you can talk to him. Wanna talk to Dillon?â
âNo,â Frankie said.
âWell okay,â Cogan said. âWhereâs he gonna be? I know youâre gonna know, if you donât know now.â
âI havenât got no idea,â Frankie said. âI seen John three or four times since I got out. I donât know what he does, nights. Goes home, I guess.â
âOkay,â Cogan said. He finished his beer. âSee you around, Frankie, my friend.â He started to get off the stool.
âWait a minute,â Frankie said.
âThereâs things,â Cogan said, âthereâs things that wonât wait. You tell me, you donât know. Okay, I accept that. But I got something to do. I got to find a guy that knows.â
âWhere Johnâs gonna be tomorrow night,â Frankie said.
âAnd something else now, I guess,â Cogan said. âLike where youâre gonna be, the day after. You gonna be here again? Gonna come in about three-thirty, drink about four beers, hang around until you eat, leave and go up Pagliacciâs like you always do, see whatâs still breathing enough to fuck, go home around midnight, one oâclock? That what youâre gonna be doing day after tomorrow? Or are you gonna be doing something else, so it takes me a couple, three days extra? Itâs not gonna matter. You could just save me a lot of time, is all.â
Frankie said nothing.
Cogan got off the stool. He rested his forearms on the back of it. âLook,â he said, âyou gotta be realistic, right, kid? You gotta be. I know the guy. I also know whatâs goinâ through your head. Heâs, you think heâs a friend of yours, right? You probably, you probably got something lined up with him right now, am I right?â
Frankie did not answer.
âIt donât matter,â Cogan said. âI know how you feel. But you think, I bet you figured, that Trattman thing, it was gonna work, right?â
Frankie did not answer.
âThem things,â Cogan said, âlemme tell you something, kid: them things, they never work. Guys with bright ideas, you know? Like Squirrel. They all know the end-around, and theyâre not gonna get something and work it steady and make it work and make it pay. Not them. Heâs always been like this, always been looking for a hustle, and guys like him, all they ever do is fuck things up. For everybody else.â
âTrattman got hit,â Frankie said.
âThereâs all kinds of reasons for things,â Cogan said. âGuys get whacked for doing things, guys get whacked for not doing things, it donât matter. The only thing matters is if youâre the guy thatâs gonna get whacked. Thatâs the only fuckinâ thing.â
Frankie nodded.
âYou,â Cogan said, âyouâre one of the few guys that know, right?â
âI dunno,â Frankie said.
âYes you do,â Cogan said. âYou know very fuckinâ well. You, you got a choice. Youâre gonna be one of the guys that gets whacked out or else youâre not. You know that. Itâs just a matter of time, now, my friend.Just a matter of time. Him first and then you. Thatâs the way youâre going.â
Frankie did not answer.
âExcept youâre in a position,â Cogan said, âyouâre in a position very few of them guys ever get in. You can do something about it. I known very few guys inna position like that.â
Frankie did not answer.
âFrank,â Cogan said, âI hope you donât think, Iâm shittinâ you.â
âLook,â Frankie said, âwho the fuck are you? I never saw you before in my life, all of a sudden youâre telling me all these things. What the fuck do I know? Maybe youâre not even here. I donât know nothing.â
âKid,â Cogan said, âI hate to see you go like this. China says youâre all right. And youâre going for fuckinâ nothinâ.â
âIâm â¦â Frankie said, âJesus, I dunno.â
âLemme ask you something,â Cogan said, âand you think about this, all right? You think, I was to go down Wollaston and see him, there, right now, I was to leave here and drive down there and see him and say: âSquirrel, itâs you or Frankie. Whoâs it gonna be?â You think heâd even think about it? You
