Robbie in his arms, and he briefly looked down to make sure he wasn’t displaying his excitement for all to see.
“Joey, is that you?”
“Yes, I made it.” He smiled, even though Robbie couldn’t see it.
Robbie stood up. “This is my mother, Claudine Jameson.” She stepped forward, and Joey walked to her, taking her hand.
“I’m very pleased to meet you, Mrs. Jameson. Robbie has told me so much about you.” Joey remembered to smile and tried to cover the butterflies that were beating their wings all to hell in his stomach.
“It’s nice to meet you,” she replied in her best formal Mississippi tone before motioning him to one of the empty chairs. “Would you like some lemonade?” He saw her look twice at him, but her face showed only polite interest.
“Thank you, ma’am, that would be very nice.” Anything for some sort of relief from this heat.
She poured him a glass and refilled Robbie’s before placing the pitcher back on the tray. “If you’ll excuse me. Adelle will call you for dinner.” She stood up to leave, and Joey put down his glass and stood as well. He had no idea where he’d learned that, but something told him to stand when a lady left the room.
Robbie’s mother turned with a ghost of a smile on her lips.
“You have manners, I’ll give you that.” She walked inside, leaving them alone, and Joey felt like he could breathe again and sat back down. He wanted to reach for Robbie, pull him into his arms, and kiss the breath out of him, but this wasn’t the farm, so he restrained himself.
“Did you have a good flight?” Robbie looked edgy and stiff, and he didn’t know what to make of it.
