Love Means No Boundaries - Andrew Grey
he was holding was taken from his hand.
“We’re not done with this discussion.”Some of the anger had slipped from his father’s voice, replaced with concern, and the knot in Robbie’s stomach unwound slightly. He felt a hand on his arm, and they made their way to what he was sure would be a tension-filled dinner.
He wasn’t disappointed. What little conversation there was happened between his parents and they pointedly avoided talking about his announcement. As soon as dinner was over, Robbie excused himself, and Adelle took him upstairs. He shut himself in his room where he immediately picked up the phone and called Arie for support.
“So you told them, huh? All of it?”
“Yup.”He was actually proud of himself. He’d been honest with them and had told them the truth.
“So he’s really coming for a visit?”Arie seemed pleased.
“He’s calling tomorrowto tell me when to expect him. I hope they come around.”Robbie couldn’t contain his excitement. Telling his parents had lifted a weight off his shoulders and he felt free regardless of his parent’s reaction.
“They will. They just need some time to come to grips with what you told them. It’ll be fine, you’ll see.” 139

It took some convincing on Robbie’s part, but his mother had indeed come around, at least to a degree. She was a mother, after all, and wanted her son to be happy. They’d talked quite extensively about him being gay, and while she was still working through things, she was trying. The Yankee part was another story.
“When do you expect him?” He knew his mother was exceedingly curious about meeting Joey. Robbie felt her hand on his shoulder, and he put his hand on hers.
“Thank you, Mama. I know none of this has been easy for you or Papa.” He turned and looked in her direction.
She sighed softly. “I always looked forward to grandchildren.” Her hand slipped from his, and he felt her sit down next to him. “Lord, it’s hot.” She shifted on the seat and remained quiet.
“What is it, Mama? What’s got you scared?”
“I keep forgetting that you see things better than most of us.” He heard her breathe deeply. “What did I do to make you… you know?” She couldn’t say the word.
“Gay?”
“Yes. Was I dominating? Did I keep you too close to me?” Fear touched her voice.
“No, you did nothing wrong.” Robbie turned toward her and felt for her hands. “I know in my heart that I was born this way. All those things you might have heard about dominating mothers and the rest is just crap.” He felt her flinch at the mild expletive.
Robbie’s mama wouldn’t say shit if she had a mouthful. “Sorry, Mama, but it’s true. I know there are people who won’t like that I’m gay, and you may pay the price.” Robbie knew the “Daughters” could be a rabid bunch and were staunchly conservative, both in religion and otherwise.
“Don’t you worry about it, sweetheart.” 140

“I do, Mama.” Robbie swallowed hard. “You shouldn’t have to pay for who I am.” He waited for her to say something, but hearing nothing, continued. “I was so nervous about telling you and Papa, and I appreciate how understanding you’ve been.” He leaned next to her and kissed her cheek. “I love you, Mama.”
“I love you too.”
Robbie knew there was a lot behind her voice. He knew his mother wished he were straight, would get married, and have children to leave Wildwood to. He even suspected that both his parents hoped this was a fad that he’d get out of his system. He wasn’t fooling himself that they fully understood. They wouldn’t, not after such a short time. But they’d listened and were trying, that was all he could ask for. Hell, it was more than he thought he’d ever get. He was beginning to wonder if someone had made off with his mama. “What did the ladies say anyway?”
“I haven’t told them.” Silly boy. “And I don’t intend to. And while your young man is here, I expect both of you to behave appropriately in public.” That was the Mama he’d come to expect.
“What happens behind closed doors is nobody’s business, but what happens in public is everyone’s business. I hope the boy has some manners.” Robbie smiled and waited for her to realize what she’d said.
“Not that you’re allowed to do anything under my roof with that boy!” That was definitely the Mama he knew. He smiled at her and patted her hand indulgently. He had no
