case. “I won’t lie to you, I thought about leaving. I don’t belong here, and your mother hates me.”
“But my dad likes you, and that says a lot.” Robbie leaned against him resting his head against his chest. “I missed you so much.” This was why he’d come all this way, and Joey felt his 151

resolve begin to crumble. Robbie angled his mouth toward his and that was it. One touch of his lips, and Joey knew he’d suffer the stares of an army of mothers for Robbie. He deepened the kiss, his tongue tracing Robbie’s lips, tasting his sweetness. Robbie moaned softly. A knock on the door broke them apart, and Joey groaned as Robbie backed away. The door opened, and Claudine glided into the room. “Do you need anything before bed?” Her eyes drifted to Joey and lingered for a second before returning to Robbie.
“No, I’m fine.” Robbie reached to his mother and kissed her softly on the cheek. “I’ll see you in the morning.” Joey saw her eyes drift over to him again, watching how close he was sitting to Robbie. Instead of letting it go, Joey took Robbie’s hand, holding it in his. He saw her expression shift, but she said nothing and left the room. “I should get ready for bed too.” Joey leaned to Robbie, taking his head in his hand and bringing their lips together. Joey wasn’t subtle. He quickly deepened the kiss, devouring Robbie’s lips and feasting on his mouth. He purposely made no further move other than to kiss him with everything he had.
Soft, throaty moans reached his ears and he kept on kissing.
Joey knew he was driving Robbie crazy, and he could feel him trying to move closer, but Joey held him still and kept kissing. Then he pulled back, tugging Robbie’s lower lip as he did. When the sweetness slipped away, he brought his lips to Robbie’s ear. “Good night.” He forced himself to get off the bed and quietly left the room. He wasn’t sure if he was doing the right thing, but he needed Robbie to be the one to decide what else, if anything, happened.
Opening the door, he stepped into the hall, turned toward his room, and saw Claudine standing at the end of the hall looking like she was watching their doors, but trying to look like she was just entering another room. Joey nonchalantly raised his hand and nodded before entering his room and closing the door. He had no 152

doubt that if he hadn’t left Robbie’s room, they’d have gotten another, probably more forceful, knock on the door.
He hoped Robbie would want to join him, although he wasn’t sure how that was possible with Officer Claudine watching their rooms, but he wanted Robbie in his arms more than he’d wanted anything in his life. Kissing him and then backing away had been nearly impossible, but the decision had to be Robbie’s. After cleaning up, he got undressed, turned out the lights, and climbed in the bed.
He couldn’t sleep. His mind wouldn’t shut off, and his body screamed for Robbie. It knew he was so close and yet so distant. Lying on his back, Joey stared at the ceiling, listening to the sounds of the house, wishing Robbie was there with him. He heard footsteps in the hall. He even heard someone stop outside his door, and he hoped it was Robbie, but whoever it was moved on. Joey tried to sleep, but there was no way.
The house became still, and the light under his door flicked out, and still no Robbie. Resigning himself to a night alone, he rolled over and punched the pillow, trying to will himself to sleep. It wasn’t working.

ROBBIE didn’t know what to do. He’d been lying on his bed for hours trying to decide what he wanted. The house had become quiet, and it had been hours since he’d heard a peep outside his door.

Twice he’d gotten up and felt his way to the door, only to make his way back to the bed. Throwing back the covers, he got out of bed, felt the top of the nightstand for the keys Adelle had given him, and made his way to the door yet again. He heard nothing as he pressed his ear to the door.

As he turned the knob, the door creaked softly, but it sounded like thunder to his sensitive ears. Again he stopped and listened. He heard nothing. No one asked him what he was doing, so he stepped out into the hall and closed the door. Inserting a key in the lock, he tried turning it and swore softly under his breath; then he used the other key to lock the door. He turned and shuffled across the hall to
