Medieval 01 - Untamed
she was taken in a net rather than from the nest. But the falconer assures me such cleverness is common for Blackthorneâs birdsâ¦if the witch Meg handles them.â
Simon made a neutral sound.
âWhat did you find when you backtracked her?â Dominic asked with almost no change of tone.
Almost, but not quite. The difference was enough to remind Simon just how deeply his brother cared about the reluctant wife with whom he was determined to found a dynasty that would outlast both the casual cruelty of nature and the calculated cruelties of man.
âI found nothing,â Simon said bluntly. âLeaper lost the scent.â
The sound of bells stilled. Dominic looked intently at Simon.
âLost the scent?â Dominic said. âHow curious. Leaper has the keenest nose of any hound Iâve ever coursed.â
âAye,â Simon said.
âWere there any other tracks around?â
âThere is a grand stag living back up from the creek that comes down to the Blackthorne River. A fox had taken a hare. An eagle and five ravens were arguing a kill.â
Dominic grunted. âAny sign of horses?â
âNary a one, even of the wild moorland breed.â
âOxen? Carts? Boot prints?â Dominic persisted.
âNo.â
âWhere did you lose the scent?â
âJust where Lady Margaret said I would, at the standing stones surrounding a heathen burial place.â
âAnd there was no sign of anyone else?â
âNot one whiff,â Simon said succinctly. âIf Duncan of Maxwellâor any other manâwas there with your lady this morning, he came on an eagleâs wings and left the same way.â
Dominic grunted.
âPerhaps she was doing as she said, gathering plants,â Simon offered.
âPerhaps. But the seedlings could have been gathered closer to home.â
âWhat of the odd leaves?â
âThe gardener had never seen their like,â Dominic admitted.
That was why Dominic was in the solar and Meg was in her rooms; he needed time to think. The first skirmishes in the battle to secure sons had gone badly. Dominic was too good a tactician to repeat his errors.
And if he werenât, he would learn and learn quickly. Never had he joined a battle half so crucial to his future.
âI may have misjudged my wife,â Dominic conceded slowly. âI certainly have mishandled her.â
âHow so? Any other husband would have beaten her soundly for setting off alone into the forest and telling no one where she went.â
âHow do you know I havenât done just that?â Dominic retorted without heat.
âAfter I dragged you out of that Turkish dungeon, you vowed you would never permit lash or cane to be used when you had your own domain. You are a man of your word.â
Dominic suddenly came to his feet. The horror of the dungeon was so great he remembered it only in dreams. And he forgot those dreams upon waking.
He preferred it that way.
âHave I thanked you for that, Simon?â
âWeâve saved each otherâs lives too often to keep track,â his brother said dryly.
âIt wasnât my life you saved that time, it was my soul.â
Bells sang, disturbed by the clenching of Dominicâs fist amid the cool chains of gold.
âI have a new duty for you,â Dominic said after a moment. âThat of guard.â
Simon turned swiftly from the fire. âHas Sven discovered more threats against you?â
ââTis not myself youâll be guarding, but my wife.â
âGodâs teeth,â Simon said in disgust.
âWho else can I trust not to seduce or to be seduced?â Dominic asked simply.
âNow I know why sultans use eunuch guards.â
âI wonât ask that final sacrifice of you.â
ââTis just as well,â Simon retorted, running a hand through his light hair. âI owe you much, brother, but not my manhood!â
Dominicâs laughter blended with the quiet murmuring of the bells as he caressed them.
âIt will be your task to see that no one goes into Megâs rooms except me,â Dominic said.
âWhat of her handmaiden?â
âWhat of her?â Dominic said indifferently. âI can dressâand undress âmy wife as needed.â
Simon managed not to laugh out loud, but his amusement was plain on his handsome face.
âFor a few days,â Dominic said, âMeg will
