Only 06 - Winter Fire
considered that you might be lecturing the wrong person?â
Connerâs mouth thinned. The look in his dark green eyes was far too adult for a boy of fifteen.
âSarah wouldnât turn away from a creature in need,â he said. âUte said you needed her. She went to you and you grabbed her.â
âYour sister came to me. I didnât grab her. Thatâs all you need to know. If you donât believe me, ask her. She wonât tell you any different.â
Conner gave Case a level, measuring look.
âMy sister wouldnât tell me different even if you had raped her,â he said flatly. âShe would be worried about me calling you on it and getting killed.â
âBut you arenât worried.â
âIâm not that stupid. I can no more beat you in a fair fight than Sarah could outwrestle you in the dark.â
Case nodded, but he wasnât as relaxed as he looked. He half-expected to have to jump Conner when the boy went for his out-sized belt gun.
âSo I wouldnât fight fair,â Conner said coolly. âIâd come at you with a shotgun from ambush. This is the only warning youâll get. Leave Sarah alone .â
For a moment Case looked thoughtful.
âWhat if she comes to me again?â he asked.
âIf she does, it wouldnât be for sex.â
Caseâs left eyebrow rose in a dark arc.
âJust because Sarah is your sister doesnât mean that she lacks womanly needs,â he said evenly.
âSex?â Conner asked derisively.
âSex,â Case agreed.
âAnything that leaves a woman bloody and whimpering isnât something she would seek out. Sarah sure didnât. She ran like hell every chance she got.â
Case went still. âWhat?â
âYou heard me.â
âYou think thatâs what sex is?â
âIsnât it?â
âNo.â
âThen why do men have to pay women to get it?â Conner asked sardonically.
âNot all men do.â
The boy shrugged. âSo they marry for it. Same thing in the end. The husband pays room and board and the wife suffers his attentions in exchange.â
Case took a deep breath and blew it out soundlessly. He had no idea where to begin fixing Connerâs sour view of what sex between a man and a woman was all about.
âBig Lola may not be the best example of womanhood to judge sex by,â Case said after a moment.
âShe sure as hell has a lot of experience.â
âOf a kind, yes. But thereâs another kind.â
âMarriage?â
Case thought of Hunter and Elyssa. Their love for each other haunted him even as he avoided any possibility of such emotion for himself.
âLove makes it different,â he said finally.
âUh huh,â Conner said, not convinced.
âItâs true. When a woman loves a man, she wants him. Physically. Thereâs no bribery, no threat, no force. Just the kind of loving that makes the sun shine brighter.â
âI havenât seen anything like that.â
âI havenât seen Paris but that doesnât mean it doesnât exist.â
âAre you saying that my sister loves you?â
The blunt question made Case wish he had never started the conversation.
âIâm not saying anything of the sort,â he muttered.
âSounded like it.â
Case blew out another breath and tried again.
âA lot of people never know the special kind of love that makes the sun brighter,â he said. âBut that doesnât mean they donât enjoy sex with someone they like.â
For a long time Conner looked at the older man without speaking. Then slowly, subtly, the boy relaxed.
âYou didnât force Sarah?â he asked.
âNo. And the next time you even hint at such a thing, I will personally whale the living tar out of you.â
Surprisingly, Conner laughed.
âIâll bet you would,â the boy agreed. âIâm sorry if I insulted you. I just had to know that Sarah wasnât being forced by a man again.â
âYou were pretty young when she was married. You might have misunderstood what all the, er, grunting and groaning was about.â
âEven a baby knows the difference between a pat and a fist.â
Case tried to think of a tactful way to ask his next question.
He came up empty-handed.
âWasnât there any tenderness between Sarah and her husband?â he asked
