Only 06 - Winter Fire
her.
âI didnât come âcrawling into your bed,ââ she said angrily. âYou were having a nightmare.â
âI donât remember any dreams.â
âYou were twitching and jerking and thrashing like a wolf in a trap.â
âDoesnât sound real inviting to me,â he drawled.
âUte didnât think so, either.â
âBut you crawled right in.â
âNo,â Sarah said, yanking the last lace tight. âYou dragged me in.â
âI suppose Ute saw that, too.â
She started pulling her underwear and pants up. At first she thought the slick heat between her legs meant that hermonthly had come early. But there was no dark stain of blood. Simply a steamy, scented moisture.
âWhat did you do to me?â she asked, startled.
Case looked over his shoulder. There was a vision of dense auburn curls and pearly skin vanishing rapidly into worn doeskin pants.
Hunger hit him like a fist, making it hard to breathe.
âYou were married,â he said roughly. âWhat do you think I did to you?â
âIf I knew, I wouldnât be asking, would I?â she snapped.
For a moment he thought she was joking.
Then he saw the wariness in her eyes. She was fastening her pants as though her body belonged to a stranger.
Case didnât know what to say.
âOh, never mind,â she muttered. âI shouldnât have let you tuck me in next to you like a child. Then I went and fell asleep. I suppose I had it coming, whatever you did to me.â
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out but silence.
She jumped to her feet, grabbed her jacket, and pulled it on. As she did, she flinched slightly. Her nipples were still hard, still very sensitive.
She looked puzzled by that, too.
So did Case.
Absently he brushed the stinging skin near his eye. The drops of blood that came away on his fingertip testified to Sarahâs speed and aim with her nails.
The corners of his eyes crinkled slightly.
âYouâre a hellcat with those fingernails.â he said.
âPractice makes perfect,â she said, her voice icy.
His eyes narrowed.
âThe next time you have nightmares about your niece,â she said in a clipped voice, âyou can damned well have them by yourself.â
âMy niece?â Case asked, startled. âWhat are you talking about?â
âIt will be tough telling you,â she drawled sarcastically, âseeing as how you told me never to say her name again.â
âEmily?â
âThatâs the one.â
She started for the privy.
âHow do you know I was dreaming about her?â he asked.
Pausing, Sarah looked over her shoulder.
âDo I take that as permission to say the sacred name?â she asked sweetly.
âHell, say whatever you want.â
âMy, you do know how to tempt a woman.â
âJust spit it out.â
She almost gave in to temptation. The icy clarity of his eyes stopped her.
âYou were thrashingââ she began.
ââaround and muttering,â he interrupted curtly. âI know that part.â
âWhoâs telling the story, you or me?â
âNeither one, near as I can tell.â
She bit back a searing word.
Normally it wasnât difficult to keep her temper. But this one man got under her skin worse than nettles.
âI talked to you for a time,â she said tightly. âSoothing you.â
âWith that honey and sunshine voice,â he suggested, his face expressionless.
She shrugged.
âWhen you settled down some,â she said, âI got close enough to touch you. I wanted to wake you up gently.â
âYou sure you werenât dreaming? I donât remember any of this.â
âYou were asleep,â she shot back.
âUh huh.â
âWhen I touched you, you didnât wake up, not all the way,â she said, biting off each word. âYou just mumbledEmilyâs name, and then something about how you thought she had gone.â
Case didnât move, yet he closed up completely.
âKeep talking,â he said.
âYou put your arm around me, pulled me under the covers, and told me not to worry, Uncle Case would chase the ghosts away.â
His eyelids flinched. It was the only sign that he heard Sarahâs words.
âThen you tucked me along your side,â she said, âcradled my face with your hand, and went back to sleep. It was a good
