Psy & Changelings 01 - Slave to Sensation
leopard?â
âYou donât,â Lucas snapped before he could stop himself. âYou belong to me. End of story.â
She narrowed her eyes at him. âI know that, your highness, but I was pointing out the impossibility of what Walker is suggesting. Thereâs no way for me to link with anyone outside of you.â
Lucasâs beast hated the thought of her linked to anyone other than him, but he realized that if it would keep her alive, heâd share her. It would tear him to pieces but heâd do it. It was the first time heâd understood the depth of his own feelings.
âAny other ideas?â Hawke asked.
Silence.
The wolf stood. âPrepare for war.â
Â
Â
Sascha argued with him every inch of the drive home. âYouâre going to let hundreds die because you want to keep me alive for a few extra days?â
âAn hour of your life is worth more than a thousand people to me.â
âWhat about Julian and Roman? What about Kit? What about Rina? Are you willing to lose them?â
He felt the questions like kicks to the heart. âThey wonât die.â
âLike hell they wonât!â The use of profanity told him how far heâd pushed her. âIf the Council decides to eliminate your pack, every single one of you will be eliminated, even if it takes them years.â
âSo you want me to lie back and let you kill yourself?â His words were so angry, her head snapped back as if heâd hit her.
âNo. I want you to help me save someoneâs life. I want you to give me back my pride.â
He scowled. âWhen did you lose it?â
âWhen I found out my mother was aiding and abetting murderers.â It was a brutally honest statement.
He tried to grasp her hand. She tore it away. âNo! I wonât let you do this.â
âYou need us to cooperate for your plan to work,â he pointed out. âNo one is going to go behind my back to help you.â They knew heâd gut them, tear them into such small strips that nothing would remain. He wasnât alpha because he played nice when his people were threatened. And his woman? Heâd lay waste to the world for her.
âMaybe I donât,â she whispered. âMaybe Iâll try it without one of you. My shields are failing one by oneâexposure is inevitable. Theyâll come after me within days and when they do, Iâll have to drop out of the Net anyway, to escape rehabilitation.â
And he knew. âYouâre going to do it with or without my help.â He brought the vehicle to a stop in the front yard of the safe house.
CHAPTER 24
âWhat would you do in my place?â Her eyes were pure black when he looked at her. âWhat would honor demand?â
âYouâre my mate. Honor means nothing.â
She opened the door and got out. He sat inside until she came around to his side and opened the door. Her hands were warm and alive on his face. âLiar,â she whispered. âHonor means everything. Otherwise, weâre exactly like them.â
Getting out, he wrapped his arms tight around her trembling form. âIâll do it.â He wondered if she understood that heâd just torn out his heart and laid it at her feet.
She shook her head. âI canât hurt you like that.â
âNo dice, kitten. Iâll anchor you and, afterward, youâll psychically reach out for me. No more fighting our mating. Your reluctance is the only thing holding it backâthe second you try to link, the bond should snap into place.â
Pushing off him hard enough to break his hold, she said, âNo.â
âYes.â
âWhat will happen to DarkRiver without you? Have you thought of that?â She was shaking her head, eyes ebony night. âYouâre not going to last longer than a couple of months if I link with you in any wayâIâll suck you dry. Donât ask me to destroy you .â
âVaughnâs strong enough to take over until Kit comes of age.â There was no choice to be made.
âNo, Lucas. No.â Her entire body was shaking.
âItâs the only way Iâll allow you to go in.â He let her hear the steel in his voice, let her remember his threat to incapacitate her. There was nothing civilized in him where Sascha was concerned. âPromise me.â
She shook her head mutely.
âPromise me, kitten.â
