Psy & Changelings 01 - Slave to Sensation
faith in her skills than she had in herself, he thought. âWhat did you find?â Theyâd discuss her connection to the PsyNet another time.
âNothing.â Fatigue dulled her tone.
He moved close enough to caress her cheek with his knuckles. âIt exhausted you.â
She didnât pull away and when his hand dropped from her face to entangle with one of her hands, she curled her fingers around his. He had to stifle the pantherâs satisfied growl.
âThere was nothing useful in the public files.â
âBut?â He could read the confusion, the bewilderment in her face. Whatever sheâd learned had shaken her enough that she was no longer able to maintain her usual mask.
Ebony-dark eyes looked up at him before glancing away. âI felt the shadows of violence,â she whispered. âLike someone had left behind a mental print in certain places.â
âCould you use it to track them?â
âNo.â She shook her head. âThe print is faint. Most Psy wouldnât even be able to detect it.â
But she had, he thought, because she felt . Instead of making her confront something he was convinced of but she was clearly hiding from, he used his free hand to tuck an errant strand of hair behind her ear. âSo the infoâs been buried deep?â
She nodded. âIâm going to try a few other things tonight.â
He smelled fear in the air. âWill it be dangerous?â
âIâm a cardinal Psy.â
âThatâs not an answer.â
âItâs all I have to give you.â She pulled her hand from his.

Some time later, Lucas sat in the huge kitchen of their largest safe house, talking to Tamsyn and two of the most dangerous males in his pack. Dorian had fought his inexplicable handicap by skilling himself in human martial arts to such an extent that he could take down a fully grown leopard with his bare hands. Nate was perhaps even more lethalâhe had cubs to protect.
âHow many here?â Lucas asked.
âFourteen maternal females, twenty cubs, eight juveniles, and six other soldiers aside from you three,â Tamsyn said from the counter, where she was organizing medical supplies.
He turned to Dorian. âIs everyone accounted for?â
âYes. Over half the children are already on their way to safe harbor.â
âLetâs start moving the remaining cubs and the vulnerable females tomorrow morning.â The soldier females like Rina would remain behind. Many of them were far more deadly than the beta males. âContinue sprinkling the elders in among the evacuees.â Their old ones would ensure DarkRiverâs traditions were passed down no matter what.
âWhy wait till tomorrow?â Nate leaned forward.
âIf we move en masse, we might tip off the Psy that somethingâs up.â
âWhat about Sascha?â Dorian asked. âIs she going to help us?â
Lucas looked at the sentinel, trying to gauge whether he was really as calm as he sounded. Mere days ago, heâd been willing to gut Sascha where she stood. âSheâs trying but we have to plan for the worst-case scenario.â
âThat she fails and Brennaâs body turns up.â Nate shoved a hand through hair starting to show faint signs of gray. âIf that happens, whatever Sascha mightâve found becomes a moot point.â
Tamsyn walked over and put a hand on her mateâs shoulder in silent support.
âI donât want that.â Dorianâs tone was as sharp as a blade. âI want the killerâs head. Ripping out random Psy throats isnât going to be enough.â
âNo,â Lucas agreed.
âI spoke to Riley and Andrew.â Dorianâs eyes were suddenly full of such anguish that it was a physical ache. âI convinced them to stay away from the Psy and give us time to find their sister. They listened to me.â Unspoken was the terrible reason why.
Lucas didnât say anything about Dorian going into SnowDancer territory on his own. âThen we have a few daysâ grace. Letâs get our people to safety and hope Sascha can find us the clue we need.â His worry for her vied with his need to protect his pack. But he knew the choice wasnât hisâshe wasnât a woman whoâd ever take orders from him.
âYou trust her?â Nate asked.
âYes.â It was no longer a question. He knew .
