Psy & Changelings 01 - Slave to Sensation
helpâI have enough Tk and Tp powers to cause some mayhem.â
âThere might not be any need for violence. The wolves have a pact with us.â Tamsyn didnât sound too convinced of her own argument. âIâve been thinking of something.â
âWhat?â Sascha paced the room, feeling more like a caged animal than the cool, controlled Psy she was supposed to be. âThat itâs idiotic to be locked up here when weâre fully capable of protecting ourselves?â
âIf you go down, you make Lucas vulnerable.â Tamsynâs words pleaded with her to think. âIf the SnowDancers pick up that the mating dance is incomplete, theyâll use you as a lever against him.â
âWill they know if we donât tell them?â
Tamsyn paused. âIâm not sure. Theyâre wolves, not cats. Their scent is very different from oursâthey might assume you already belong to Lucas.â
For some reason, that made Sascha smile. âHow can you talk about belonging to someone so easily? I thought predatory changelings were independent by nature.â
âSimple.â Tamsyn walked over and took Saschaâs hand. âBecause Lucas belongs to you, too.â
Sascha wanted to break the contact but she could feel the healerâs need for touch, for Pack. Nate was down there facing off with the wolves, and despite the logic of her statements, Tamsyn was terrified. Not quite understanding how she knew what to do, she pulled the other woman into a hug. Tamsyn came without hesitation.
âHow can you treat me like one of the pack?â Sascha asked, even as she stroked Tamsynâs thick fall of hair.
âYou smell of Lucas, and I donât mean on a physical level. Itâs difficult to put into words.â She pulled back from the embrace, as if sheâd received what she needed to be strong again. âOur bodies and hearts recognize yours. We know youâre one of us.â
âBut Iâm not mated to Lucas yet,â Sascha argued, feeling the noose slip about her neck. She couldnât, wouldnât, destroy these people whoâd come to mean everything to her. If Lucas went down, DarkRiver would fragment. The pack might physically survive with the deadly sentinels at the helm, but theyâd all be broken. She would not do that to them.
âYouâre so close as to make little to no difference.â Tamsyn pushed her hair off her face and held up a hand when Sascha began to speak. âDonât ask me what the final steps are. I canât tell you. Itâs different for each couple . . .â She sighed. âBut the male half of the pair usually has a better idea of whatâs neededâI guess itâs natureâs way of ensuring the more independent females canât avoid bonding.â
âHeâll never tell me.â She sat down heavily on the floor, her head hanging between bent knees. âIâm coming apart at the seams and I refuse to take Lucas with me.â
Tamsyn knelt in front of her. âThatâs not your choice to make. Mating isnât marriage. You canât divorce each other and you canât walk away once youâve found one another.â
Sascha met the other womanâs compassionate gaze. âIâll destroy him.â It was a painful whisper.
âMaybe. Or you might save him.â Tamsyn smiled. âWithout you, Lucas mightâve become too much his beast, too much the predator, cruel and without mercy.â
âNever.â
âHe was christened in blood, Sascha. Donât ever forget that.â Tamsyn sat down cross-legged in front of her. âUntil he met you, do you know what he was like? Do you know where he was going? Day by day I watched him get more protective, more unbending and strict, especially with the kids, and there was nothing I could do.â
Sascha was caught by the passion in the healerâs voice. âHeâs undoubtedly our alpha, someone weâd follow into hell and back if he asked it of us. But it takes more than an iron fist to rule, and he was starting to lose those other parts.â
âHeâs so good with Kit,â Sascha said, recalling all the times sheâd seen him with the juvenile.
âFive months ago, not long after we lost Kylie, he banned Kit from solo runs.â
âWhy?â
âHe didnât want the boy hurt.â Tamsyn shook her head. âKit has the
