bears on the front."
âI got it."
âOh, and if she gets really cranky, she likes the sound of the vacuum cleaner."
Jake nodded. âVacuum cleaner, right."
âApplesauce. Thatâs her favorite after-dinner snack."
âYou wrote it all down, Sarah."
Sarah kissed Caitlyn on the cheek, tears welling in her eyes and streaming down her face as she said, âI love you, baby. But you need to go with your daddy."
Caitlynâs tiny hands cupped Sarahâs face. Her daughter had no idea what was happening.
âMama cry,â Caitlyn said, wiping her hand across Sarahâs wet face. âMama sad."
âIâm okay. Iâll see you soon, baby,â Sarah said, her heart breaking in two. With one last tight squeeze, she handed Caitlyn over to Jake.
Caitlyn, God bless her, gave Jake a happy, trusting smile, not realizing that he was about to take her away from her mother.
Jake stroked Caitlynâs curls as he looked at Sarah. The pulse in his neck was beating fast. âYouâll see her tomorrow, you know. Iâm not going to keep you out of her life. I wouldnât do that to you."
âI know. Itâs just difficult. We still havenât talked about how weâre going to take care of her in the future. Thereâs so much we havenât discussed. This is happening so fast. Iâm not ready."
âWeâll talk when you get to San Francisco.â Jake cleared his throat. âItâs going to be all right. Weâll work it out."
âDrive carefully,â she said.
âI will.â Jake put Caitlyn into her seat and strapped her in. When he got out of the car he gave Sarah a reassuring look. âDonât worry, Sarah. Sheâll be safe with me."
âI know that. I trust you. I do."
Jake started to say something and then changed his mind. He walked around the car and got in. He started the engine and pulled away quickly, giving her no chance to beg him to stay.
Catherine and Teresa came down the path. Sarah saw the questions in their eyes. They didnât understand her actions, but they would support her anyway. âI have to give him this time. I owe him."
âYouâre so strong now,â Catherine commented. âThe little girl who used to crawl into my bed at night is all grown-up and braver than I could ever be."
âIâm not brave. Iâm really not.â But Sarah waited until Jakeâs car had turned the corner before she sank into Catherineâs loving arms and cried her heart out.
âIt will be all right,â Catherine said soothingly.
âYouâll figure out a way to make it all work. Jake seems like a good guy,â Teresa put in. âAnd if he tries to take sole custody from you, weâll kick his butt."
âHe is a good guy,â Sarah said, sniffing as she tried to pull herself together. âHeâs the best. I ruined everything. I had the perfect family."
âOh, sweetie,â Catherine said with a sad smile. âDonât you know yet that perfect doesnât exist?"
âI still want it to."
âCinderella and the prince -- your favorite fairy tale,â Teresa said. âHow about we get some breakfast before I drive you to LA?"
âAre you sure you want to do that? I can rent a car."
âDo you actually have an ID?â Teresa asked.
âCome to think of it, no, but I do have cash.â And now she remembered where sheâd gotten the cash. Sheâd never put any of her paychecks into the bank. Sheâd cashed them and kept the money in the heater vent with her IDs. She wondered what it would be like to live her life above ground again, to be able to walk freely down the street, not be concerned whether anyone was following her. She couldnât even imagine it.
âIâll drive you,â Teresa said. âIt will be fun. A road trip."
âIâm coming, too,â Catherine said.
âI donât know why youâre both being so nice to me.â Sarah shook her head. âI donât deserve it."
âYes, you do. Youâre a good person,â Catherine stated firmly. âDonât forget that. Every decision you made, you made out of love."
Before Sarah could reply a car came around the corner, a very familiar car. She straightened in alarm.
Jake pulled up in front of them and jumped out of the driverâs seat. He dashed across the sidewalk.
âWhatâs wrong?â Sarah asked as he
