    Receptions and Conferences / Empfänge und Tagungen
    In vielen Ländern ist es üblich, sich zu Stehempfängen oder einem Umtrunk zu treffen, um Neuankömmlinge vorzustellen, um sich informell über geschäftliche Ereignisse zu informieren oder einfach um die so genannten „weichen“ Faktoren des Geschäftslebens zu pflegen. Entweder werden Sie formell zu diesen kleinen Stehempfängen eingeladen oder Sie werden nebenbei darüber unterrichtet, dass eine derartige reception (Empfang) stattfindet. Natürlich wird damit von Ihnen erwartet, ebenfalls dort zu erscheinen. Bei Kongressen und Tagungen gehört eine reception (hier: Stehempfang) zum cultural package (Kulturpaket). Bei der Anmeldung bekommen Sie in der Regel eine kleine Mappe, die das Programm, Informationen über den Tagungsort sowie Ihr Namensschild beinhaltet. Meist wird auch noch Ihre Arbeitsstätte, Ihre Universität oder Ihr research institute (Forschungsinstitut) dazu geschrieben. Dieses Schild sollten Sie sich sofort anstecken, es erleichtert die Kommunikation und die Anrede für die anderen enorm.
    In den USA fängt eine Konferenz meist mit einer plenary welcoming session – einer Vollversammlung zum Zweck der Begrüßung – an, so dass sich der erste Stehempfang gleich danach anschließt. Mit einem Getränk und etwas finger food, pretzels (AmE Salzstangen) oder ein paar munchies (Knabberzeug) begeben Sie sich nun unter die Menge, die sich Richtung Bar immer dichter drängt. Dies sind perfekte Bedingungen, um seinen Small Talk anzufangen.

    Sally: Hi Jo, how are you? I see you're from the University of Wisconsin. Are you at the Madison campus, or further north?
    Jo: I'm at the Madison campus. Have you been there? Sally: As a matter of fact, I have. I did my undergraduate work there.
    Jo: Really! It's a small world, isn't it? Did you like it in Madison?
    Sally: Yes, I did, very much indeed. I loved being near the lake and people were so kind.
    Jo: And your name tag says Arizona. You are now in Arizona?
    Sally: Yes, I am. I just moved there six months ago. It sure takes a while to get used to the heat.
    Jo: I bet it does. I've never been there, but I'd love to see the Grand Canyon one day. Well, it was nice talking to you. Enjoy the conference.
    Sally: Thank you, you too.

    Invitations / Einladungen
    Eine Einladung nach Hause ist, ebenso wie in Deutschland, als ein Fortschritt in den Beziehungen zu sehen, als Beginn einer Freundschaft, die über das Geschäftliche hinausgehen kann. Eine Einladung nach Hause kann auf verschiedene Weisen geschehen. Mündliche Einladungen sind oft schwer zu deuten. Wie oft hat nicht schon jemand zu Ihnen gesagt It would be so nice to have you over one day oder Let's get together. Give me a call, will you? Und dann passierte gar nichts! Haben Sie vielleicht die indirekte Einladung nicht verstanden? Why don't you oder Would you like to nehmen hierbei Sonderstellungen ein: Diese Indirektheit ist ein Zeichen der Höflichkeit und bedeutet in etwa „Möchten Sie“.
