do you want?â
âIâve got new instructions from Lance,â she said.
âI donât work for Lance, and I donât take his instructions, unless I feel like it.â
âThis is handed down from the director, bypassing Hugh English.â
âHow do I know that?â
âDo you expect the director to call you?â
âWell, that hasnât happened so far.â
âAnd itâs not going to happen now.â
âWhat are these instructions?â
âWeâve got to identify Robertson beyond question.â
âIsnât a strong suspicion enough to call the cops, or Interpol?â
âThe problem is, he may be someone else.â
âSomeone else? You mean, besides the Heathrow robber?â
âThis never goes to Hugh English or anyone else.â
âI donât like the sound of this.â
âIt doesnât matter whether you like it; this has to be done.â
âAll right, I agree. Now, who does Lance think he is?â
âMaybe Teddy Fay.â
Pepper burst out laughing.
âNo kidding.â
He stopped laughing. âHeâs not dead?â
âI wish he were.â
âThis is nuts.â
âMaybe so, but there it is. Prove heâs not Teddy. Prove heâs Barney Cox or anybody else. We have to know.â
Pepper sighed. âThis might be fun, if it werenât so crazy.â
âI hope you enjoy the experience.â
âIs that why youâre on St. Marks? To track down the maybe mythical Teddy Fay?â
âYes.â
âDid Lance offer any suggestion as to how I am to proceed?â
âHis view is that youâre here, on the ground, you have resources, and you know best how to use them.â
âGreat, and what are you going to do?â
âDonât go near Robertson; those are my instructions.â
âAnd who do I report my findings to?â
âMe. Iâll report to Lance.â
âThis is very weird.â
âI canât deny that.â
âYou were sent here to find Teddy, but youâve been told not to pursue your primary suspect? Or is he your primary suspect? Is there anybody else?â
âWhat do you think of Pemberton or Weatherby as suspects?â
âJesus, I donât know; I wasnât looking for Teddy Fay when I checked them out.â
âHow did they check out?â
âOkay; they had the usual paper trail; as far as I can tell, theyâre who they say they are.â
âHave you ever seen either of them?â
âNo; theyâre snowbirds; they donât spend all their time here.â
âAre they worth my pursuing them as suspects?â
âWell, apparently, you donât have anything else to do.â
âTell me what else you know about them.â
âNothingâa criminal record, use of a false identityâhas come up.â
âPlease let me know if you hear anything else.â
âIâll get back to you.â
âBye.â Holly hung up, still pissed off that she wasnât being allowed to investigate Robertson.

K ate Lee arrived back at the White House, shed her Secret Service detail and went up to the family quarters. Her husband was sitting in front of the big flatscreen TV he had had installed, watching Katie Couric deliver the news. A commercial came on.
She kissed him. âYou gave up the guys for a girl?â she asked, mixing them a drink at the bar concealed in the bookcases.
âI alternate,â he said. âIf you were home in time to watch the news more often, youâd know that.â
âIf I were home in time to watch the news, you wouldnât talk to me until the news was over, anyway.â
âYou have a point, as usual.â They touched glasses and drank.
âWhat are we doing for dinner?â
âI ordered a pizza.â
âWhat, weâre having dinner alone together twice in one week?â
âAmazing, isnât it?â
The commercials ended, and Katie returned. Kate knew better than to talk before the news was over. Couric wrapped up simultaneously with the arrival of the pizza.
Will opened the box and looked at the pizza. âShit,â he said.
âWhat?â
âGreen peppers. I ordered the Extravaganza with no green peppers.â
Kate began picking out the green slivers and putting them aside. âI hope the voters that depend on green pepper growing for
