Twilight: Bay City Paranormal Investigations, Book 3
get myself in the wet spot.”
Bo laughed. “You could move.” He stood to retrieve his underwear from the floor.
“No. Too tired.” Sam yawned and stretched, watching Bo pull on his boxer briefs and jeans. “I sure hope no one notices the come on the blanket when we leave and they strip the beds.”
The grin on Bo’s face was pure evil. “By then there’ll be a lot more spunk on the bed, and that one little spot will just blend right in.”
Groaning, Sam kicked Bo’s good leg with one sock-clad foot. “Quit being a smart-ass and come lie down with me. We can take a nap before sunset.”
“Just a short one, though.” Rising with a grimace, Bo crawled onto the bed. “We want to have time to get everything together for this evening’s investigation before we go.”
“I’ll set the alarm on my watch.” Sam raised his left arm and pressed a few buttons on his watch, squinting in the low light. “There. Half an hour. Okay?”
“That’s good.” Bo went into Sam’s embrace and curled against him with a sigh. “Love you.”
Sam tightened his arms around Bo. “Love you too.”
Lifting his face, Bo claimed a sweet, lazy kiss, then rested his head on Sam’s chest. Sam kissed Bo’s hair. He closed his eyes and drifted off with the feel of Bo’s heart beating against his.
Chapter Five
On the way to Sunset Rock, Bo walked between Lex and Carl instead of beside Sam. Strolling along by himself behind Dean and the talkative older couple he’d befriended on the trail, Sam watched Bo in silence. Bo’s faded jeans hugged the hard curves of his thighs, and his braid swung across his back as he turned to talk to first Carl, then Lex. The canvas messenger bag holding the EMF detectors, flashlights and other equipment hung at Bo’s side. Sam wished Bo’s red down jacket didn’t hang so low. It hid his ass.
Of course, Sam reflected, not being able to see Bo’s delectable rear was probably a good thing at this point. Sam already itched to push forward and claim Bo with an arm around his shoulders and a kiss to his lips. Or at least walk beside him. But Bo had thought it best for them not to pay too much attention to each other, to keep from arousing suspicion. Sam understood Bo’s reasoning—even agreed with it, to some extent—but that didn’t make it any easier to stay away from him. Especially not after the lovemaking they’d shared that afternoon. He flexed his buttocks, enjoying the faint soreness in his anus.
Tearing his gaze from Bo’s profile, Sam glanced at the couple Dean was talking to. They looked to be upwards of seventy, both white haired with lined faces, but obviously healthy and in excellent physical condition. And, Sam noted with a twinge of jealously, openly affectionate toward one another. They walked with their hands intertwined, exchanging frequent smiles and glances full of love and heat.
It was a heartwarming sight, but it filled Sam with sadness. He and Bo could never do something as simple as holding hands in public without first assessing the situation—the environment, the people, the prevailing attitude toward gays. He envied straight couples the easy openness of their relationships. At that moment, he would’ve given anything to know what it was like to take his lover’s hand without a second’s consideration for what anyone else might think, or do.
Dean turned to frown at him. “Sam, what are you doing back there all by yourself?”
Sam shrugged. “Just zoning out. Enjoying the scenery.”
“Wait till we get to the Rock,” the woman said, shooting a twinkle-eyed look at Sam over her shoulder. “It’s such an incredible view. Very romantic.” She bumped her husband’s shoulder with hers, smiling.
“Sure is,” the man agreed with a nod. “We’ve hiked up here every year for the last seven years. We never get tired of it.”
“This is their fiftieth anniversary,” Dean chimed in. “Isn’t that fantastic?”
“It certainly is,” Sam answered, impressed. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you,” the two of them chorused. They looked at each other and burst into laughter. Letting go of her hand, the man slipped an arm around her waist and cuddled her close.
Dean dropped back to walk beside Sam. “Aren’t they great?” he murmured, watching the couple with a dreamy look in his eyes. “Gotta say, I’m kind of jealous. I’d love to be in love like that. You know, with someone who loved me too.”
