die auf See verloren geht. Auch die amerikanische Schriftstellerin Andrea Barrett, bekannt geworden mit historischen Romanen und Erzählungen, in denen es von Biologen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert nur so wimmelt, fand in ihrem 1996 mit dem National Book Award ausgezeichneten Erzählband »Ship Fever« (W. W. Norton & Company, New York) in Alfred Russel Wallace’ Leben Inspiration für die Figur des Alec Carrière in der Erzählung »Birds with no Feet«. Die Erzählung ist als »Paradiesvögel« im Band »Schiffsfieber« auf Deutsch bei Claassen (München, 2000) erschienen.

    Natürlich kommt kein Werk wirklich ohne jene reichen Quellen aus, aus denen es schöpft. Zwecks leichterer Lesbarkeit wurde im vorliegenden Buch auf Fußnoten verzichtet und auch darauf, im laufenden Text jeweils fachlich korrekt die erwähnten Quellen, vor allem Historiker und ihre Einzelarbeiten oder die Werke historischer Personen, zu zitieren. Bei den wesentlichen originellen und Original-Beiträgen wurden diese jedoch wenigstens kurz namentlich erwähnt.
    Das nachfolgende Verzeichnis listet die für die vorliegende Biographie eingesehene und vielfach als Grundlage verwendete Originalliteratur sowohl sekundärer Quellen als auch der wichtigsten Werke von Wallace auf. Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit ist natürlich nicht zu erheben; für weiterführende Quellenhinweise sei auf die oben zitierten Werke verwiesen.
