candy gets gone.” Laughing, Bo held a hand down to help Sam up. “We wouldn’t want to miss out on the good candy.”
Sam snagged his jacket and shrugged it on. He took Bo’s hand as they left the apartment. Bo gave his fingers a grateful squeeze. 94

Chapter Nine
Bo called Lee at work the next day to explain what he and Sam wanted to do, and why. Though wary of Janine’s reaction if she should find out, Lee agreed to let them know the next time she went out of town on assignment.
Sam knew waiting would be difficult. He steeled himself for days—weeks, maybe—
of dealing with a tense and worried lover. It surprised both of them when Lee called back a mere two days later, on Thursday afternoon. “Janine’s going to Montgomery tomorrow for an assignment at the state capital building,” Bo explained after he hung up the phone. Sam’s pulse picked up. “And Sean?”
“Spending the night with a friend of his.” Skirting his desk, Bo walked over to stand beside Sam. “We won’t get a better chance than this.”
“You’re right.” Taking Bo’s hand, Sam laced their fingers together. “We have a preliminary visit for the downtown library investigation tomorrow, but we should be done before five.”
“Good. I’ll talk to Andre and we’ll work out the details.” Bo gazed up at Sam with solemn eyes. “I’m scared, Sam.”
“Of what?” Sam asked, though he thought he knew.

“Of what we might find.” Bo moved closer, his free hand creeping around to rest on the small of Sam’s back. “What do we do if we find out there’s a real danger of a portal opening? How do we get the kids out of there? If we just take Adrian and run, she’ll send the police after us and they’ll take him straight back there.” The fear in Bo’s voice tore at Sam’s heart. Releasing Bo’s hand, Sam wound both arms around Bo’s waist and pulled him close. “We’ll think of something. We won’t let anything happen to either of those kids. I promise.” Bo couldn’t possibly think Sam had the power to keep that promise if they came face to face with another portal, but he clung to Sam as if he believed it with all his heart.

At eight o’clock on Friday night, the BCPI team arrived at Lee and Janine’s house.
Squeezing six people and all their investigative equipment into Sam’s pickup and Dean’s Civic wasn’t easy, but everyone agreed that more than two vehicles would be even more conspicuous than a company SUV.
Lee came out onto the back porch just as Sam and Dean parked their vehicles in the narrow space to one side of the backyard. “Hi,” he greeted them as they grabbed the equipment bags and crossed to the porch. “Come on in.” They all trooped through the back door into the kitchen. Shifting his camera bag to his left hand, Bo stuck out his right hand to shake Lee’s. “Thank you so much for helping us do this, Lee. We really appreciate it.”
“I’m happy to do it. I’m not sure what’s going on with Adrian, but I’d like to make sure he and Sean are safe here.” Lee leaned against the wall. “Do you need me for anything? Because to tell you the truth I’m still not feeling very well.”
“You don’t need to do a thing,” Bo assured him. “Why don’t you go lie down?”
“I think I will.” Pushing away from the wall, Lee shuffled toward the archway leading into the dining room, the BCPI group trailing behind him. “Let me know if you have any questions or anything. I’ll just be watching TV upstairs. That’s okay, right? It won’t interfere with anything?”

Andre shrugged. “Normally I’d ask you not to, but in this case we want pretty much a normal nighttime environment. So just go about your usual routine.”
“Okay.” Lee shot a thoughtful look over his shoulder. “Normally we’d all be in the family room at this point, should I go in there instead?” Bo shook his head. “I don’t think that’s necessary. Just you being here and going about your business will be enough.”
“We’re going to do a quick sweep with cameras and EMF, including the family room,” Sam added. “We want to see if the EMF in there is within a safe range now that the electrician’s been out to fix it.”
“It better be, after all the money we spent.” Lee stopped in the foyer and gestured up the steps. “All right, I’m going
