the same time.
âFaroe. Is Emma nearby?â
âYes,â Mac said.
âPut your phone on speaker. It will save time.â
âOn speakerâ¦now.â
âOkay. You both hear me?â Faroe asked.
âYes,â they said together.
âA man called Timothy Harrowââ Faroe said.
âOh shit,â Emma said.
ââcalled. I guess Emma knows him,â Faroe said.
âWe worked together when I was new to everything spooky,âshe said. âWe worked real close for a few months, but he didnât wear well.â
âIt took about thirty seconds for me,â Faroe said.
âYouâre a man. If heâd been a hot woman, I wouldnât have been in the same room with him for longer than it took to say good-bye.â
Faroe laughed.
Mac shook his head.
âDid good old Tim tell you anything we didnât already know?â Emma asked.
âNope,â Faroe said. âAccording to him, we have no need to know.â
âOkay. This really is an official cluster,â she said. âWhat little gems did he share with you?â
âHarrow, who never admitted to being with the Agencyââ
Emma made a rude sound.
ââtold us that itâs all very hush-hush, Canada isnât in on the whisper circuit, and there could be some heavy lifting ahead. So St. Kilda is supposed to shut up, get down with the opposition, and report every little fart and burp to Harrow, who, by the way, is now running this op.â
Emma shook her head.
âBullshit,â Mac said.
âHeâs high on the crap quotient,â Faroe agreed. âBut heâs in charge.â
âWhat?â Mac demanded.
âIâll bet Harrow made an offer St. Kilda couldnât refuse,â Emma said. âLike Alara.â
âPretty much,â Faroe said. âWhen Steele told her about the new player, Alara started speaking in foreign tongues, and Iâm betting she wasnât describing flowers. Steele stuck to Urdu, which means weâre well and truly in the toilet, and someone is fondling the flush lever.â
âCan we trust Harrow?â Mac asked her.
âDepends,â Emma said. âHeâs real far up the feeding chain, not like I was. I was a regular mushroomâkept in the dark and fed horse apples. I got tired of it and left the Agency.â
âIf Harrow is high on the food chain, I donât trust him,â Mac said.
âThatâs my boy,â Faroe agreed. âSteele is the only Big Man In Charge I trust, period. And some days, I wonder about even him. Heâs had a rough day or two. We had a rescue operation go south. Everyone got out alive, but not without blood. Shit happens and all that.â
âEmma, would you trust Harrow as a working partner?â Mac asked.
Silence, then, âHe knows where a lot of bodies are buried, and heâs buried a few on our side. If I had a choice about trusting him, Iâd keep him in front of me.â
âBut we donât have a choice,â Mac said. âAnd we donât trust him.â
âAmen,â she said beneath her breath.
âYou can be as touchy-feely as you like with him,â Faroe said, âbut heâs giving the orders. He made that deadly clear.â
âWhat does he want?â Emma asked.
âYou and Mac at the following coordinates, and he wants it all yesterday.â
Mac wrote while Faroe read numbers.
âOh,â Faroe added. âHe thinks youâre still in Campbell River.â
âWe are,â Emma said instantly.
âIâve been chasing electrons,â Mac added.
âAny luck?â Faroe asked. âI hear theyâre quick little buggers.â
âIâve caught enough that we can be at Harrowâs coordinates between one and two this afternoon. More or less.â
âDepending on weather, and we wonât know until we get there, right?â Emma added.
âHarrow is going to have a litter of green lizards,â Faroe said.
âSweet. Iâll make a video and put it on YouTube,â she said.
âDoes Steele care how we deal with Harrow?â Mac asked.
âShort of getting caught committing murder, no,â Faroe said. âWhat do you have in mind?â
âIf I tell you,â Mac said, âSt. Kilda Consulting will be responsible for my actions. If I donât tell you, then you have a rogue agent causing you
