Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
probably not working tomorrow night, either,â Mitch said. âWe got to set this thing up, and all. Whoâs gonna help me?â
âI got a kid,â Cogan said. âHeâs not the sharpest thingI ever seen, but heâll do what you tell him. You want him to drive, heâll drive. Anything.â
âIs he gonna fuck up?â Mitch said. âNever mind what somebody tells him, does he fuck up?â
âLook,â Cogan said, âthis kidâd tear a fuckinâ car in half with his bare hands, you asked him. Heâs very dependable. But you got to tell him. You tell him, heâll do it. Heâll go through a fuckinâ building, heâs got to.â
âI personally,â Mitch said, âIâd rather have a guy thatâd see the building and go around it. I canât afford, I donât want no guy thatâs gonna go on no fuckinâ rampage the minute I let him out of my sight. You sure you canât come in on this?â
âLook,â Cogan said, âthe guyâs nameâs Johnny Amato. I know him. I did, he wanted Dillon to do something for him once, and Dillon couldnât do it. So Dillon told him, if it was all right, heâd ask me, and the guy said: âYeah.â So I did it, and he paid me. He knows me.â
âHow much does this kid know?â Mitch said.
âKenny?â Cogan said. âKenny knows nothing. I didnât tell him nothing. He donât know youâre in town. He knew it, it wouldnât mean nothing to him.â
âI donât want him,â Mitch said.
The waiter brought Coganâs change and the coffee.
âI donât want that, either,â Mitch said.
The waiter left.
âI didnât say you wanted it,â Cogan said.
âI donât want no fuckinâ nutcakes, either,â Mitch said.
âWell,â Cogan said, âlook, I mean, you got to tell me what you want, then, right? Because I donât know.â
âWhere is this guy?â Mitch said.
âQuincy,â Cogan said. âWollaston, actually.â
âI donât know where the fuck that is,â Mitch said.
âI can show you,â Cogan said.
âBut he knows you,â Mitch said. âGreat. Look, this other guy, the one youâre doing?â
âYeah,â Cogan said.
âDo him,â Mitch said, âand the way I get it, thatâs gonna do something to the guy Iâm supposed to hit.â
âGot to,â Cogan said.
âGonna make him relax, or something,â Mitch said.
âI think,â Cogan said.
âOkay, then,â Mitch said. âSo, we got to give him a chance to relax then, havenât we? And you got to get me somebody that can drive a car without running into things, and also you got to get me something. You havenât got anything yet, I assume.â
âI was gonna ask you what you wanted,â Cogan said.
âGood,â Mitch said, âforty-five Military Police. I never use nothing else.â
âOkay,â Cogan said.
âIf youâre the guy thatâs starting it,â Mitch said, âitâs a great thing. One of them. And a guy that can do things. How longâs that gonna take you?â
âDay or so,â Cogan said.
âAnd a car,â Mitch said.
âStill a day or so,â Cogan said.
âAnd where heâs gonna be,â Mitch said.
âSame thing,â Cogan said.
âYou know something?â Mitch said. âI donât think you can do it that fast.â
âI can,â Cogan said.
âWell,â Mitch said, âthen I think youâre not gonna and I donât care if you can or not. Now, thisâs, weâre gonna do this, this is Thursday. Weâre gonna do him Saturday night. Thatâs when weâre gonna do it. You guysâre all half-assed up here. You donât take the time to think about things. I do.â
âAlways glad to meet a guy, you can learn something from,â Cogan said.
âI been at this a long time,â Mitch said. âI messed up some things, but never one of these. Now, that leaves me tonight and tomorrow night. Whoâs gonna see me tonight?â
âI canât promise nothing special,â Cogan said.
âDonât like fuckinâ, is that it?â Mitch said.
âNever paid for it, anyway,â Cogan said.
âWell, companyâs what I want,â
