Only 06 - Winter Fire
those Culpeppers once and for all,â Hunter said calmly.
âAmen,â Morgan said. âItâs a durned long ride to make every time we hear rumors that you bit off more Culpepper than you could chew.â
âHow well are they dug in?â Hunter asked his brother.
âTheyâre lazy,â Case said. âMost of them have brush wickiups that wouldnât stop a bullet.â
âAb?â Hunter asked.
âHe and two of his kin are kind of dug into the side of the canyon.â
âAny good angles of fire?â
âOnly one, and itâs guarded.â
âAny chance of burning them out?â
Case shrugged. âIt could be done, but Iâd hate to be the man to do it.â
âWater?â Hunter asked.
âItâs called Spring Canyon because water runs year round.â
âSupplies and bullets?â Hunter continued calmly.
âEnough of both for a long winter or a short war.â
âWeak points?â
Ute gave Hunter an approving glance.
âLack of discipline,â Case said promptly. âThere have been unauthorized raids on some ranches in the high country.â
âAny raiders get killed?â
Case looked at Ute.
Ute shook his head.
âSons of bitches cow chasers canât shoot a fish in a barrel,â Ute said, his voice rich with disgust.
âAny raids here?â Hunter asked.
âCase can shoot,â Ute said succinctly. âWe done some buryinâ.â
âNot enough,â Case said.
âAre they watching the ranch?â Hunter asked.
Ute and Case both nodded.
Hunter looked quickly at Sarah, who was still scrubbing the pot.
âThatâs part of the reason they watch,â Case said roughly. âThe rest is Spanish silver.â
âI heard some loose talk about treasure,â Morgan said.
âSo did the Culpeppers and Moodyâs bunch,â Case said. âTheyâre hunting silver.â
Sarah looked up from the pot.
âThey wonât find it,â she said.
âWhat makes you so sure?â Hunter asked.
âIâve been thinking about it.â
Case turned and looked narrowly at Sarah.
âAnd?â Case prompted.
âTheyâre looking in the wrong place.â
âWhat makes you say that?â he asked.
âLike I said, Iâve been thinking.â
âAbout what?â
âIâm not saying one more word until I get to look for it myself,â she said flatly.
âYou think Iâd steal it?â Case asked, his voice hard.
She looked as shocked as she was.
âOf all the fool ideas,â she retorted. âOf course I donât. I donât think your brother or Morgan or Ute or Lola or the darned chickens would steal it, either.â
Case lifted his left eyebrow and waited.
âIâm getting cabin fever,â she said. âIf I canât hunt silver, no one can.â
âItâs not safe forââ
ââanyone,â she cut in. âBut you come and go all thetime. Iâm tired of being a prisoner in my own house.â
There was a tight silence. Then Case swore under his breath and looked at Hunter.
His brother just smiled.
Case turned back to Sarah. The look in his eyes was colder than winter.
âWhere do you want to start?â he asked.
âIâll tell you when we get there.â
âOf all the stubbornââ
âLooks like youâre going to be busy,â Hunter interrupted. âMorgan and I will divide up your watches.â
Case started to object.
âAs long as Sarah is with someone,â Hunter said, âsheâll be safer out of the cabin.â
âButââ Case began.
âIn fact,â Hunter continued without a pause, âshe might consider sneaking out after dark and sleeping in the brush with a guard. This cabin would burn like a torch.â
Case went completely still.
âWeâve got four men to stand guard over her all the time,â Hunter said to his brother. âIf you canât do it, one of the rest of us will.â
âConner couldââ she began.
âNo,â Ute and Case said as one.
âWhoever guards you will be a target,â Case explained. âConner hasnât had much practice at that.â
Ute nodded. âGood boy, but he lacks seasoning.â
âI donât want Conner put in danger because of me,â she said tightly. âI
