Only 06 - Winter Fire
When they finally finished off the women, they took the children andâ¦â
The silence that followed was even more unbearable than his eyes.
Sarah remembered then what Lola had said about the Culpeppers.
They sold kids to the Comancheros, after doing things to the youngâuns that would shame Satan .
âWhen I finally found Em and Ted, I didnât have a shovel,â Case whispered. âI dug their grave with my fingernails. Then I went looking for Culpeppers.â
She watched his eyes and wept silently, helplessly, for she knew now just what had driven Case away from laughter and hope and love.
His memories must be even worse than her own.
âNow do you understand why I pushed you away?â he asked.
Silently she looked at him, hurting for him.
âTed and Emâs deathâ¦â His voice died. He shrugged. âIt killed something in me. I canât give you what you deserve.â
âWhat I deserve?â she asked, not understanding.
âA husband. Children. Love. It isnât in me anymore. Itâs as dead as little Em.â
âI donât believe it. Anyone as gentle as you hasnât lost the ability to love.â
Case looked directly into Sarahâs eyes.
âAll I have for you is lust,â he said bluntly. âWhen a man has seduction on his mind, heâll do whatever will get him what he wants quickest. You wanted tenderness. I gave it to you.â
Sarahâs smile quivered, yet it was very real.
âDid I ask for anything more?â she whispered.
âYou donât have to. Itâs there in the way you look at me when you think I donât know.â
âLike I want to put a knife in your back?â she suggested, smiling despite her tears.
The corner of his mouth lifted, making him look even sadder than before.
âYou canât fool me,â he said. âYouâre like a beehive. Once you get past the sting, thereâs nothing but pure sweetness beneath.â
âWeâre both fully grown. You want something I can give you and I want it, too.â
He shook his head.
âYou just said you wanted me,â she pointed out. âWell, I want you.â
He looked at her scarlet cheeks, tear-bright eyes, and trembling lips.
âPure wild honey,â he said huskily. âDonât tempt me.â
âWhy not?â
âI could make a baby with you, thatâs why.â
âA baby,â she repeated softly.
Then she smiled.
Case pushed her away.
âI donât want a child,â he said. âEver.â
Her arms tightened around him. She stood on tiptoe and kissed the corner of his mouth. Then she touched his lower lip with the tip of her tongue.
He jerked back as though he had been stung.
âDonât tease me into making you pregnant,â he said harshly. âI would hate both of us for it. Is that what you want?â
She closed her eyes and let go of him. Without a word she went and picked up the spindle and began the endless work of spinning.
A moment later the harsh sound of corn being crushed between two rocks came from the other end of the room.
Neither Sarah nor Case spoke again.

â T hat hombre is a grinding fool,â Lola said, surveying the mound of cornmeal Case had made the night before.
Sarah didnât say anything.
âYou got a lot of spinning done, too,â Lola noticed.
âConner is growing faster than a weed.â
âAnd Case is as twitchy as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.â
âI hadnât noticed.â
Lolaâs crack of laughter made Sarah wince.
âDonât you know by now how to take the heat out of a manâs mad?â Lola asked.
âIt takes two.â
âYou saying you donât want him?â
âNo. Iâm saying he doesnât want me.â
âHorseshit.â
âAmen,â Sarah muttered.
She worked the spindle so hard it became a blur. The pile of wool beneath her fingers turned into yarn with astonishing speed.
Lola didnât take the hint and drop the subject.
âHeâs got a real lust for you,â she said. âGets hard as a post just lookinâ at you.â
The spindle jerked. The yarn stretched almost to the point of breaking.
âAll right,â Sarah said through her teeth. âCase wants me but he wonât touch me because he doesnât want to get me pregnant. Satisfied?â
