Psy & Changelings 01 - Slave to Sensation
that heâd never felt from any other being. âIâll be back in a few hours.â
âIâll keep them safe.â

Lucas dropped Sascha off around the corner from her apartment. âHow are you going to explain the absence of your car?â
âIâll say it was stolen when I parked it near a changeling area. I didnât bother filing a report because the area is populated by DarkRiver leopards and I decided the carâs value wasnât worth antagonizing you.â
âTheyâll believe that?â
âMost of the Psy consider changelings to be a lower species, so yes. Iâll have a new car within a few hours.â Her crisp tones held no hint of the woman whoâd wrapped her arms around him. âIs there any information I can share without making you vulnerable?â
He tapped the wheel with his finger. âI canât know what they might use the information for.â
âIâll stall.â
âIs that safe?â
âI donât expect to be around long enough for them to get impatient. A couple more days might irritate Enrique but I canât see it escalating into anything major.â
He caught the edge of something in her voice that he couldnât quite understand, but she was already opening the door. âStay safe, Sascha darling.â
For a second the mists fell from her eyes and he saw the real woman. âI wish Iâd been born in another time, another place. Then maybe I couldâve escaped fate . . . maybe I couldâve been your darling.â
She was gone before he could speak. He watched her walk down the street and turn the corner. She never looked back.

Enrique hadnât left Sascha a message the night before. He hadnât needed to. Once again he was waiting for her in her motherâs office.
âSascha,â Nikita said from behind her desk, a certain hardness in her eyes. âI hope the amount of time youâre spending on this project will prove justified.â
It was an odd thing to say, especially since Nikita had been the one whoâd first suggested that Sascha oversee every detail. âItâs going along very smoothly, Mother. I believe changelings appreciate the personal touch.â
âVery true.â Enrique turned from the window to face her. âYou appear to have a good handle on how they think.â
Careful, Sascha told herself. She couldnât let them get suspicious about just what she knew and wasnât telling.
âIâm not sure the praise is warranted, Councilor. Iâm merely using well-known Psy techniques for dealing with their species. As I said, theyâre extremely wary about sharing any information with me.â
âAre you saying you still havenât penetrated their defenses?â It was almost a taunt and it came from Nikita.
Saschaâs suspicions about Nikita and Enrique being a team grew stronger. âItâs difficult. The leopards use emotions as their social glue.â They could hardly fault her for being what theyâd made her.
Enrique stared at her, cardinal eyes unblinking. âUnfortunately thatâs true.â He looked at Nikita. âPerhaps weâre putting undue importance on Saschaâs ability to gather information.â
Weâre.
So they were in it together, whatever it was. Instead of defending her skills, she let them make up their minds without interruption, as if the sly insult mattered nothing. Of course the insult was only in her mind. To Enrique it had probably been nothing more than a summation of her ability.
âThank you, Sascha,â Nikita said. âIt appears this venture wonât allow us to collect as much factual data as weâd hoped.â
Sascha said her good-byes and left the office, a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. Throughout everything, sheâd been trying to ignore the fact that her mother might be assisting a killer escape justice, inventing fairy tales where Nikita somehow remained free from the rest of the Council. Seeing her with Enrique had slapped her awake. The Council was divided in some matters but when it came to the outside world, they were a solid wall.
If one knew, they all knew.
It was equally obvious that Sascha had been meant to be a mole from the start. Nikita had been the one to pursue a deal other Psy avoided and sheâd been the one whoâd suggested Saschaâs ongoing
