The Thanatos Syndrome
also looking a little poorly, Doc.â
âIâm fine. Thank you, Elmo. Give my best to Miss Maude when you see her.â
âIâll surely do that. She thinks the world and all of you.â
âOne last thing, Doc.â
âYes?â
âIf you ainât back here by two, itâs my ass.â
âIâll be back.â
âItâs your ass, too.â
âI understand.â
Breakfast is at least four scrambled eggs, fried ham, a mountain of gritsâthe âbig hominyâ kind, which I havenât seen for yearsâand hot chicoried coffee.
I eat it all. There is a glass of water. It reminds me of something. I call Elmo.
âOne little question, Elmo. Iâll explain later.â
âSho, Doc.â
âThe breakfast was delicious. Where does the water come from?â
Elmo Jenkins laughs. âYou noticed. Donât worry about it, Doc. You not drinking river water. Thatâs Abita Springs water, right from our back yard, the best in the world, as you know.â
âI know. What do the prisoners on the farm drink?â
âThatâs river water, treated so itâs safe, but I can taste the chemicals.â
âYou mean from the Ratliff intake?â
âRight, Doc. Seems like you know this country around here.â
âA little.â
âEnjoy your walk, Doc.â
I call Lucy. She picks it up on the first ring. âYes?â she says breathlessly. Sheâs ready. âIs that you?â
âYes.â
âYou all right?â
âIâm fine. Is Vergil there?â
âRight here.â
âDoc?â says Vergil.
âYou all right?â
âIâm fine.â
âWhat are we going to do, Doc?â
âWeâre going to get Claude.â
âFine. How are we going to do that? I already tried. Theyâre all locked up and donât answer the phone. You think we ought to call the police again?â
âNo. Hereâs what weâre going to do. You know where Tunica Landing is?â
âI surely do. Thatâs where my daddy used to put in to cross over to Raccourci Island.â
âGood. I want you to meet me there in forty minutes.â
Pause. âDoc, you in Angola. How we going to do that?â
âDonât worry. I have aâlike a pass. Does your daddy still have his pirogue?â
âNo, sir. He got a new one, a light fiberglass one , just before he got sick. He only could use it once or twice. Itâs good as new.â
âWill it hold three people?â
âThree people. Well, it will hold me and my daddy and two hundred pounds of nutria.â
âCan you get it in Lucyâs truck?â
âWith one hand.â
âGood. Is Uncle Hugh Bob there?â
âYes, sir. You want to talk to him?â
âNo, thatâs not necessary. Just tell him to come with you. Heâll be glad to. And tell him one more thing.â
âYes, sir.â
âYou know that old long-barrel Colt Woodsman heâs got?â
âI sure do.â
âTell him to bring it.â
âTell him to bring it,â Vergil repeats.
âFor dogs.â
âFor dogs,â Vergil repeats.
âThey might have guard dogs at Belle Ame.â
âAll right, Doc.â He seems relieved.
âWe not going to kill them. We probably wonât even need it.â
âRight Doc.â
âI figure it will take you forty-five minutes or so to get up to Tunica Landing. Iâll probably be there by then. If not, wait.â
âWeâll be there.â
âAnd Vergil.â
âYes, sir.â
âDonât worry about Claude. I feel sure heâs all right. But I donât want my kids in that place and Iâm sure you feel the same way.â
âI sure do. But whatââ
âWeâre just going to ease down the river to the old landing at Belle Ame and pick up Claude and maybe have a little talk with those folks. Later weâll call the police. But I want Claude out first. We canât go by car because the gateâs locked and theyâd be expecting us. Theyâre not going to be expecting anybody from the landing. So weâll have a look around, and a little surprise wonât hurt them. They canât lock the landing. But there might be some dogs.â
âWeâll be there in thirty minutes, Doc.â
âGood. Let me talk to
