Traitor's Moon
itâs time we had a chat with Nyal. Iâll ask Adzriel to have someone bring him to her house discreetly. We donât want to attract attention.â
Korathan shot him a questioning look. âWho is this Nyal?â
âA confidant of Lady Amaliâs, my lord. These are delicate matters. It would be best if he thinks himself among friends,â Seregil explained. âIâll have Adzriel, Alec, and Thero as witnesses. I think Klia will agree that this is best. My lady?â
Klia nodded slightly.
âVery well,â Korathan said grudgingly.
âThis shouldnât take long,â Seregil promised. âSend word to the Iiaâsidra that youâll meet with them in two hours.â He paused. âBeka, do you want to be there for this?â
She hesitated, flushing a bit behind her freckles. âWith my lordâs permission?â
âBe my eyes and ears, Captain,â said Korathan. âIâll expect a full report.â
With that settled, Seregil left the others and found Adzriel waiting just down the corridor.
âIâll send Kheeta to fetch Nyal,â she said. âI hope for Bekaâs sake that he hasnât betrayed you.â
âSo do I. But I suspect sheâs right about him knowing more than heâs let on.â
Adzriel went down the back stairs and he followed, motioning for Alec and the others to remain behind.
At the lower landing, just off the kitchen, he laid a hand on her arm. A ray of late-afternoon sun slanted in through the open door beyond, striking golden glints in her dark hair even as it highlighted the circles beneath her eyes. She looked older suddenly, and careworn.
âI have something for you,â he told her, pressing Corruthâs ring into her hand. âIt belongs here. Who knows what the Iiaâsidra will decide.â¦â He faltered, unable for once to find the right words to shape his meaning.
The light struck the ringâs large red stone, scattering bright spangles across her palm like tears of blood.
She looked down at it, then leaned forward and kissed him, first on the brow, then on the back of his bandaged hand. âIâm proud of you, my brother. Whatever judgment the Iiaâsidra passes, you returned and Iâm very proud of you.â She touched his wounded hand again. âMay I see?â
The teeth marks had scabbed over cleanly, each darkly ringed with blue lissik.
âMake certain the Iiaâsidra see this,â she advised. âLet them see that the dragons have claimed you. Whatever the khirnari may say, you will carry this mark of favor forever, hereââshe touched a hand to his heartââand here. Come over when youâre ready. Iâll see that Nyal is there.â
Seregil kissed her cheek, then returned upstairs to find the others crowded around Kliaâs bed.
âShe spoke!â Alec told him, making room. âShe wants to go with us to the Iiaâsidra.â
âIs she strong enough?â Korathan asked, looking to Mydri.
âIf we wrap her well and keep her from any jolts,â his sister said. Looking down at Klia, she shook her head. âIs it important enoughto justify the risk, my dear? Youâre not strong enough to speak at any length.â
âMust see me,â Klia whispered, her brow furrowed with effort.
âSheâs right,â Seregil said, giving the sick woman a smile. âLet them see just how badly the laws of hospitality have been breached.â Leaning down, he clasped her sound hand and added softly, âIf you werenât a princess, Iâd have had you working with me long ago.â
Her fingers tightened around his as she gave him a fleeting grin.

A dzriel opened her own sitting room for the interrogation. Seregil, Alec, Beka, and Thero were already in place when Kheeta ushered the Raâbasi in. Beka acknowledged him with a terse nod, remaining where she was in the embrasure of the window.
Nyal gaped in amazement at the two returned fugitives. âSo you were captured after all?â
âNo, we brought ourselves back,â Alec told him.
âAfter all the trouble of getting away? Why?â
âWe found out a few more things along the way,â Seregil told him. âWe need your help again. Iâm hoping youâll give it as freely as you have in the past.â
âWhatever I can do, my friends.â
âGood. There are
