Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
agents escorted Russell out of the terminal, into the darkness.
âThatâs not one of your rights, my friend,â the agent said. âThatâs one of my rights. But I got a little deal for you, all right, my friend? Any time you wanna talk, just tell me, and Iâll shut up. Just say the word and you have got the fuckinâ floor.â
âFuck you,â Russell said.
The Polara made a U-turn on St. James and pulled up in front of the terminal.
The agent dug the barrel of the automatic into Russellâs rib cage. âThat, my friend,â he said in a soft voice, âis not the kind of talk I meant. Peopleâve been known to fall down a lot getting in and out of cars and so forth when they talk like that. Got it?â Russell said nothing. âAnd another thing, my friend,â the agent said. âNot only are you stupid but you stink. I think youâre gonna get twenty years and a bath. I dunno which you need more.â
âT HE STUPID SHIT ,â Frankie said. He sat in Amatoâs office. âYou know who he picks to call, of course. Me. Only he donât remember I moved, so he calls Sandy, and he got her up and sheâs all pissed and she calls me and give me a whole ration of shit and then I got to call him and I hadda girl with me. And of course I got to give my name to them, they wonât let anybody else talk to him.â
âThatâs good,â Amato said.
âYeah,â Frankie said. âOh, Iâm gonna really enjoy this, I can tell. Wants me to come down and see him. âYeah,â I said, âsure, Russell, and I wonât have a hundred ballbusters following me around for the rest of my life if I do that, either. No thanks. I didnât have nothing to do with it and I told you what was gonna happen and you wouldnât listen to me.â
â âDid you tell them?â he says to me,â Frankie said. â âAre you the fuckinâ bastard that told them?â
â âRussell,â I said,â Frankie said, â ânobody hadda tell them. You told them yourself. What am I gonna tell cops anything for? Tell me that, huh? You wanna blame somebody, blame yourself.â That calmed him down some. Well, will I make bail for him? âDepends,â I said. See, he hasnât got no money left. Spent it on his problem, which I donât think theyâre probably gonna let him go out and sell, now. âWhatâs the bail?â Just what youâd expect, his record and a pound of that stuff. One hundred thousand dollars.â
âTen K from you,â Amato said.
âWell,â Frankie said, âthereâs guys thatâll write onefor five per cent if you wanna handle some things for them now and then, but onna guy like him I doubt you could get it even from one of them. But either way, itâs too much, and besides, I tell him, âKeep in mind, I just got out of the can myself. Whereâd I get all that bread?â No, I said Iâd call somebody for him, but thatâs all, he can make his own deal. âYou ask me,â I said, âI donât even think thatâs gonna do it for you, though. You raise the hundred, theyâll go to double surety or two hundred or something. Those guys arenât gonna let you out. Forget it.â
âSo thatâs what he tells me,â Frankie said, âand then he says: âFrankie, if I donât get out of here, Iâm gonna tell them you were in it with me.â â
âNice guy,â Amato said.
âAh,â Frankie said, âhe was all pissed off. I donât blame him. And what the fuckâs he gonna tell them? I said: âRussell, get off the pot, all right? You bring me into this, Iâll tell them everything you told me about Goat-ass stealing that other stuff, and all the dogs and the insurance thing you had with Kenny onna car and everything. So donât hand me that shit.â Heâll be all right. Itâs just, heâs looking at a lot of time. You canât blame him. I asked a guy, he said his guess is, probably eight, ten, something like that. So naturally that means, they probably told him guysâve been getting fifteen or so, maybe more.
âThem guys,â Frankie said, âI mean, they are
bad
. This kid I talked to, he said they come at you from just about every place at once. âThey tell you,â he said, âyou
