Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
donât have to say nothing to them. But that sure donât stop them from saying something to you. They toss you in New York,â he said, âitâs gonna take them, always, three or four hours, before you can see a judge, and all the time theyâre
talking
to you. I think them guysâve got cassettes in them. âYouâre a lost dude this time. Youâre gonna go in and youâre never gonna come out again. Youâre crazy, thatâs all. We know youâre not in it alone. You better talk about it.â â So, he was probably pissing his pants when he called me. So I told him: âRussell, I tell you what: Iâll get you a lawyer. Thatâs all I can do for you.â â
âThe fuckâs a lawyer gonna do for him?â Amato said.
âHeâs gonna do it for me,â Frankie said. âHeâs gonna get Russell off my back. He wanted Mike Zinna.â
âI doubt if you can get him Mike,â Amato said. âI doubt if Mikeâll touch him.â
âOh, for Christ sake,â Frankie said. âOf course I canât get him Mike. I canât afford Mike, I couldnât get Mike for myself. And Mike, Mike couldnât do nothing for him. Whatâs he gonna do, the guyâs alone and heâs got it in his hands? Make it disappear? What Russell really needs is a magician. No, I got him Toby.â
âI dunno Toby,â Amato said.
âThatâs because you never had nothing to do with junk,â Frankie said. âWhen they grab you with the junk, you call Toby and you pay him no moreân a grand and he gets you as good a deal as anybody could. The cops all know him. Heâs cheap and all the good anybody can do for Russell, Tobyâll do it, and without going all ape-shit and telling the guy to give them the names of everybody he ever saw.
âAdded to which,â Frankie said, âthereâs certain things Toby wonât do, and thatâs good for me. Because Russellâs gonna want something else, I figure.â
âSomebody hit the guy he thinks put him in,â Amato said.
âRight,â Frankie said. âSo, all right, Iâm a bastard, but thereâs no way inna world heâs gonna be able, get Toby to tell me that, and Iâm not personally gonna go down and see him.â
âWhere is he?â Amato said.
âCharles Street,â Frankie said.
âYouâll get the message, then,â Amato said.
âI donât object to hearing it,â Frankie said. âYou hear it, you can always say, well, what the fuck, I wouldnât go around and do something like that on what I heard. No, if the guy asked me, Iâd have to tell him something, I guess, and I donât wanna do that, you know? I like Russell. He was all right to me, and I told him, not to do this. But shit, Goat-ass just did what he wanted, he went out and stole four pounds of procaine or something like that, and I suppose some fuckinâ cop was bright enough, starts wondering who wants pounds of that stuff and that was it for Russell. Goat-ass didnât do anything. And besides, who the fuck am I? I didnât, I donât know anybody.â
âI see where Trattman knows a couple guys or so, though,â Amato said.
âThat poor bastard,â Frankie said.
âWell,â Amato said, âI mean, it wasnât like, you didnât expect it or something.â
âSure,â Frankie said. âBut, you know, when it didnât happen, and Russell was telling me all that stuff there, then I was scared shitless, it wasnât gonna happen. I thought it was gonna happen to me. That donât mean, well, yeah, Iâm glad it happened to him. But, I still wish it didnât even happen to him, you know? Didnât have to. Like Russell. I knew this was gonna happen to Russell. I told him. But the fuck, I know the guy. And I canât do nothing to help him. I donât know anybody.â
âHe took his chances,â Amato said.
âSure,â Frankie said, âand now heâs gonna take his time. And youâre taking your chances and Iâm taking my chances and weâre gonna do this thing, sooner or later, and probably theyâre not gonna get us this time, either. But I was thinking about it, right? Suppose, me and Dean go in the place, all of a sudden we got all kinds of cops around. Who do I call? Who do I call, thatâs
