Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade Movie Tie-in Edition)
think he would?â
âI dunno,â Frankie said.
âYou asshole,â Cogan said. âAn asshole like you, itâs no wonder you did time.
You fuck kin asshole
. You havenât got no brains at all.â
âLook,â Frankie said, âlook, I â¦â
âI havenât got to look,â Cogan said. âLook, I know whatâs going on. I know what I got to do. I need a right guy.â
Frankieâs mouth worked. He did not say anything.
âIf I get a right guy,â Cogan said, âI told them this,by the way, I said: âThereâs two ways this thing can go. The hard way is, I do them both. The other way, I only gotta do one guy.â I took a lot of shit for that. You know how I got them to go along with this? China. China says youâre all right. So, I always like China, I can do something for China, Iâm gonna. China donât want, you hit. Very loud on that point. Says youâre a good guy, kind of guy itâs good to have around. Okay. But you know where China is. All he can do is come up here and talk. He canât actually do nothing for a guy.â
âNo,â Frankie said.
âI can do something for a guy,â Cogan said. âI donât have to, but I can. Now make the pick, kid, and make it right now. Iâm gonna do China a favor, Iâm not gonna do China a favor. Donât matter to me.â
âLemme think,â Frankie said.
âNope,â Cogan said, âno thinking. Go or no go, right now. I got to get going.â
Frankie exhaled heavily. âI donât know,â he said. âI donât know if I can do this.â
âCan you do the other thing?â Cogan said.
Frankie hesitated. âNo,â he said.
âWell,â Cogan said, âthatâs the selection. So, I guess you know, then.â
Whatâve I gotta do?â Frankie said.
âYou gotta find out where heâs gonna be,â Cogan said.
âI already know that,â Frankie said. âWeâre, he asked me what I was gonna be doing, heâs gonna be some place and he wants to call me or something. I know where heâs gonna be. Heâs got a girl. He told me that, before. I told him I was gonna be home, Iâd be home.â
âYouâre not gonna be,â Cogan said.
âIâm not?â Frankie said.
âNo,â Cogan said.
âWhere â¦â Frankie said.
âYouâre gonna be with me,â Cogan said, âand weâre gonna be where heâs gonna be.â
âJesus,â Frankie said, âI canât do that. He sees me, itâs all over. Heâll know, somethingâs wrong. I canât do that. Iâll tell you, Iâll tell you where heâs gonna be. Iâll do that. But, heâs a friend of mine. I canât do that.â
âOkay,â Cogan said, âokay. Thatâs, you made the other choice then, I guess.â
Frankie stared at Cogan. Cogan did not move. Frankie said: âHave I really got to do that?â
Cogan nodded.
âAll of it?â Frankie said.
Cogan nodded.
âI got to be there and everything?â
Cogan nodded.
âItâs not,â Frankie said, âitâs not like, there was anything I could do, anybody else inna world couldnât do. Itâs not that. You, there must be hundreds of guys, you can get. You donât need me.â
âWrong,â Cogan said. He put his hand on Frankieâs shoulder. âFrank,â he said, âitâs not like I donât understand whatâs on your mind, right? But this thingâs a problem. And part of it, itâs partly your fault. You made a mistake. Now you gotta, you got to do the right thing. You gotta show, you understand, you made a mistake, and you gotta make things right. Otherwise, guys know you made a mistake, right? And thatâs when theyâre gonna want somebody to do something, like with Trattman. He never did the right thing.â
Frankie nodded.
F RANKIE DROVE the Gold Duster quickly through the arch with the orange lanterns into the curving drives of Stuart Manor. The apartment complexes were two-story, the first of vertical redwood planks, the second stucco, half-timbered. The parking areas were filled with Volkswagens, Camaros, Mustangs and Barracudas. There were coach lights with orange bulbs above each door.
âJee-zuss,â Cogan said, âI finally made it.
