Sie gehörten zu den zahlreichen heterodoxen Gemeinden, die nach dem Ersten Konzil von Nicäa im Jahr 325  n. Chr., auf dem das paulinische Christentum quasi zur orthodoxen Religion des Römischen Reichs erhoben wurde, marginalisiert und verfolgt wurden.
